Japanese Winds of Change at Mazda
Part VI The New Venture in Thailand
マツダの風 Auto Alliance Thailand (AAT), an automaker run jointly by Mazda and Ford, is scheduled to start mass production on May 29. Unlike Auto Alliance International (AAI), where Mazda started operations on its own and then became a joint venture with Ford 5 years later, the Thai-project is a first for the two companies to work together from the planning stage. The development has been challenging along the way due to the instability of the Thai economy. And production starts at a time when trend of worldwide restructuring within the auto-industry is accelerating. For Mazda, a key part of Ford's strategy in Asia, operations at AAT will be important in determining its future succes.
