Order eyed to have doctors, transport firms work in emergencies '03/8/4

TOKYO, Aug. 4 Kyodo - A draft revision to a Cabinet ordinance on the Self-Defense Forces (SDF) Law allows governors to order doctors, nurses, pharmacists, construction firms and private railway, bus or truck companies to continue working in times of emergency if requested by the Defense Agency, informed sources said Monday.

The draft also says governors can bring automobile maintenance shops and gas stations under their control, according to the sources.

The draft is being prepared to complement the revised SDF law, one of three war-contingency laws enacted in early June. The ordinance is expected to be revised in early September.

The government decided to stipulate a new ordinance necessary for the SDF to conduct its duties in the event of war contingencies.

According to the sources, the ordinance also covers dentists, assistant nurses, clinical laboratory technologists and radiological technologists. It also includes ferry operators, high speed vessel operators and airline companies.

The draft also states that the central government will pay for the costs incurred by these service providers in complying with the order, as well as compensation for any who die in such situations.
