Children's representatives deliver commitment to peace

(August 6, 1999, The Chugoku Shimbun)

Ryosuke Sumiyoshi and Hitomi Shintani delivered the Peace Commitment at the Peace Memorial Ceremony which appealed to all. The ceremony was held in the Peace Memorial Park, where their clear voices resounded throughout, "As children born and raised in this city, we believe it is responsibility to convey to friends around the world the vital importance of peace."

The elementary students, who study in the A-bombed city, were winners of the Peace Summit Essay Contest and selected as children's representatives. Ryosuke Sumiyoshi (Sixth Grade, Hiroshima City Yano-minami Elementary School) and Hitomi Shintani (Sixth Grade, Hiroshima City Honkawa Elementary School) contributed to the contents of this "commitment", which were composed through participating in lively discussions among other 20 applicants. All the applicants agree to include their concept, "We must learn to talk with and understand each other, to treat our friends with consistent kindness, and find the courage to do the right thing." In order to eliminate conflicts, environmental disruptions and bullying, the children incorporated their practical ideas into the commitment.

After completing this important assignment, Sumiyoshi said with satisfaction, "I definitely don't approve of war, which tears a family apart. I think I was able to express myself well." Shintani commented, "I want to think about what I can do for peace."

At the same time, Shinya Ishitani (Sixth Grade, Hiroshima City Midorii Elementary School), who dedicated a wreath to the Memorial Cenotaph and tolled a bell of peace said, "As I participated in the ceremony today, my wishes for peace became greater."
