Spring is Near

Although winter is making a big effort to remain in the Chugoku region for as long as possible, with intermittent snowfalls in the mountains, the opening buds on the trees indicate that spring is not far away. At Hesaka senzoku, in Higashi-ku,the nekoyanagi (pussy willow) trees on the banks of the Ota River are in bloom and their white flowers add a dash of colour to the surroundings. Night-time temperatures have been a little lower than usual, but during the day, the mercury has been climbing to around ten or eleven degrees.

Shimanami Lights Up

On May 1 the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido opens to traffic. The road is the third link between the main island of Honshu and Shikoku and connects the cities of Onomichi and Imabari. The road is expected to have a beneficial economic effect on the local communities through which it will pass and a series of events has been planned to mark the opening.

A major link at the southern end of the route is the Kurushima Kaikyo Ohashi, which is the first of its kind in the world. The bridge is a series of three connected suspension bridges and on February 12 was floodlit for the first time. A total of 600 lights were attached to the cables supporting the bridge and the cables made a long belt of lights as they snaked over the main supports, which were floodlit, and down to the road level.

Studying Hiroshima Hiroshima is a favoured destination for high schools on their spring and autumn study trips. To help the students understand the significance of their trip, a civic body has recently put out a booklet. Entitled Handbook for Study Trips in Hiroshima, the 65-page booklet was published by the Heiwa Kokusai Kyoiku Kenkyukai. Some of the study group's members who live in Hiroshima interviewed A-Bomb survivors and summarised their message in simple, easy-to-understand Japanese. Mr Shigeo Sawano,from Yasuda Girls' high School explained that the aim was to enable high school students to understand the horrors of nuclear war and the importance of peace. The booklet costs \600 and is available from bookstores and from the Peace Museum.

Lowering the Steps Hiroshima Dentetsu is to make things easier for the old and infirm at their tramstops. Work will be carried out to platforms at 44 locations to allow passengers in wheelchairs to board tramcars. The stops are on the Miyajima Line and between Hondori and the company's main depot in Sendamachi.

「春はもうすぐ」

　冬は、ときおり山間部に雪を降らせ、中国地方にできるだけ長く留まっていたいよう。しかし、木々の開きかけたつぼみが、春がそう遠くないことを知らせてくれる。広島市東区戸坂千足では、太田川の川岸にネコヤナギが咲き乱れ、まわりの景色を黄色く色付けている。夜間には普段より気温は下がるものの、昼間は10度から11度まであがっている。

「しまなみのライトアップ」

　５月１日、瀬戸内しまなみ海道が開通する。本州と四国を結ぶ３番目の道路で、尾道市と今治市を結ぶ。このしまなみ海道によって、地域経済の活性化が期待されており、開通を祝う数々の行事が計画されている。

　しまなみ海道の最南端にあるのは来島海峡大橋で、世界でもこの種の橋が架かるのははじめて。３つのつり橋が連続しており、２月12日にはじめてライトアップされた。全部で６００の電球が橋を支えるケーブルにつけられ、この長い光のベルトのようなケーブルが、ライトアップされた主柱に結ばれ、道路の高さまで降りている。

「広島を学ぶこと」

　広島は、高校生の春や秋の修学旅行の行き先として人気がある。生徒たちに（広島での）修学旅行の意義を理解してもらうため、市民団体がパンフレットを作成した。「広島修学旅行ハンドブック」と題された65ページのハンドブックは、平和・国際教育研究会から出版された。広島に住む研究会のメンバー数人が被爆者にインタビューし、日本語で分かりやすくまとめたものである。安田女子高校の沢野重男教諭は、出版したねらいは、高校生たちに核戦争の恐ろしさや平和の大切さを理解してもらうためと話している。ハンドブックは６００円で、書店や原爆資料館で買うことができる。

「段差を低く」

　広島電鉄は、お年寄りやからだの不自由な人でも、停留所で楽に電車に乗れるようにする。工事は四十四か所の停留所で行われ、車椅子の人でみ乗れるようにする。対象となる停留所は、宮島線と本通りから中区千田町の広電本社前の間となる。
