Hiroshima is No. 1

The New York Times recently compiled a list of the 'Best 100' works of journalism in the 20th century. Topping the list as the best nonfiction work is John Hersey's Hiroshima. Hersey visited Hiroshima in 1946 and saw at first hand the devastation caused by the atomic bomb. His essay was published in The New Yorker, an influential magazine, and in fact took up the entire issue. Very little information had so far circulated among the American public about the effects of the atomic bomb, especially the effects of radiation, and Hersey's essay caused a major sensation. It had great influence on the formation of grassroots anti-nuclear movements. Hersey's work is at the head of a distinguished list, containing works such as Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Bob Woodward & Carl Bernstein's reports on the Watergate crisis, and John Reed's Ten Days that Shook the World, which graphically described the 1917 Russian Revolution.

The Duck Begins to Fly...

The new 'duck-billed' shinkansen began operation on Saturday last week. A posse of camera-toting train enthusiasts assembled in Hiroshima Station at 8.30 am to greet the first 700-series Nozomi, as it arrived from Hakata on its way to Tokyo. The 700-series train, known by its distinctive nose shaped like a duck's beak, is wider, quieter, and more energy-saving than the trains it replaces. Passengers now have a choice of three types of Nozomi for their journeys between Hakata and Tokyo. The original Nozomi will still operate, but three return trips will be handled by the new 700-series train, and eight by the faster 500-series train.

...To the South

On the same day as the new Nozomi began operation, another link in the road network connecting Hiroshima and Shikoku was opened. The Nishi-Seto Onomichi Interchange is the hub of a network of roads connecting the Sanyo expressway and the Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi with Imabari in Shikoku. With the opening of this interchange and its connecting roads, all the road links on the Honshu side of the Shimanami Kaido are in place.

Oversized Arrival

The world's largest cargo plane paid a visit to Hiroshima airport last week. The Russian-built Antonov 124 delivered Hiroshima Dentetsu's first Green Mover, a new type of low-floor tram, built in Germany. The entire five-car tram was able to fit into the plane's huge hold and was gently eased on to a low-loader for its overnight trip to Hiroshima via National Route 2.

「ヒロシマがナンバーワン」

　米紙ニューヨーク・タイムズはこのほど、２０世紀におけるジャーナリズム活動のベスト１００を発表した。ノンフィクション作品のトップは、ジョン・ハーシーの「ヒロシマ」だった。ハーシーは１９４６年に広島を訪れ、自分の目で原爆の惨事を取材。その作品が権威あるニューヨーカー誌に載せられ論議を呼んだ。アメリカ社会ではそれまで、原爆の影響、とくに放射線の影響に関する情報がほとんど流されておらず、ハーシーの作品は大きな反響を巻き起こした。また、この作品は、草の根の反核運動の形成に大きな影響をおよぼした。ハーシーの作品は、レイチェル・カーソンの「沈黙の春」、ボブ・ウッドワード、カール・バーンスタイン両記者によるウォーターゲート事件の調査報道、１９１７年のロシア革命を写実的に描いたジョン・リードの「世界を揺るがした１０日間」といった、名高い作品が並ぶリストの第一位となった。

「あひるが飛び立った・・・」

　先頭がアヒルのくちばしのような新しい新幹線が、先週の土曜日から運行し始めた。カメラを持った多くの鉄道ファンが、博多から東京へ向かう途中の７００系のぞみを見るために、午前８時半に広島駅に集まった。先頭がアヒルのくちばしのような独特の形で知られる７００系は、従来の新幹線よりも広く、静かで、消費電力も少ない。今や博多−東京間の利用客は、３種類ののぞみから選ぶことができる。昔からあるのぞみも運行されるが、３往復が新しい７００系で、８本がより速い５００系で運行される予定だ。

「南へ・・・」

　新しいのぞみが運行を始めた日、広島と四国を結ぶ新しい道路網が完成した。西瀬戸尾道インターチェンジは、山陽道と、尾道市と四国の今治市を結ぶしまなみ海道とをつなぐ中継地点となる。このインターチェンジの供用開始により、しまなみ海道の本州側連絡路はすべて整った。

「特大の到着」

　先週広島に、世界で最も大きい貨物飛行機が到着した。ロシア製のアントノフ１２４は、広島電鉄では初の導入となる、ドイツ製の新しいタイプの低床式電車「グリーン・ムーバー」を運んできた。全部で５両の電車は、この飛行機の巨大な貨物室にちょうど納まる大きさ。国道２号線経由で広島へ向かう夜の旅のために、そっと積み込みのトレーラーに移された。
