A Guide for the Spirit

For the first time in its 44-year history, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum has published a pictorial record. The book, written in Japanese with an English translation, is at the same time an introduction to the tragedy of the atomic bomb and a guide to the museum. The Japanese title is Hiroshima o Sekai ni (in English, The Spirit of Hiroshima). The 127-page A4 size book is lavishly illustrated with maps, explanatory charts and photographs both of Hiroshima before and after the atomic bombing and of objects recovered from the ruins.

After some cutaway maps of the Peace Museum, the tragedy depicted in the book unfolds in six chapters, each of which corresponds to a principal theme in the museum's presentation of the reality of the bombing. In simple language and graphic detail are presented: Hiroshima as a military base before the bombing; the development of the atomic bomb in the United States; the actual bombing of Hiroshima and the immediate aftermath; the resurrection of the city; the dawning of the nuclear age; and Hiroshima's efforts for a nuclear-free world peace. Some of the photographs are poignant: the fingernails and skin of a junior high school student who was just 600 metres from the hypocentre; the clothes of other high school students, together with photographs of the wearers; the carbonised contents of a student's lunch box. The book comes with two maps, both bilingual, in a separate envelope. One is a detailed map of the Peace Park and vicinity; the other is a guide to the whereabouts of surviving A-bombed buildings and also of some 47 trees which survived the bombing.

Over the Sea to Shikoku: I

It will soon become much easier to travel by road from Hiroshima to Shikoku. Just under one month is left to go before the general opening of the

Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, which connects Onomichi and Imabari. Staff are now being trained to operate the six extra toll gates which will come into operation. Many of the new staff are unemployed boatmen.

Over the Sea to Shikoku: II

From April 1 it also became easier to fly between Hiroshima and Shikoku. J-Air has opened a new route between Hiroshima and Kochi. Departures from Hiroshima-nishi airport are at 07.35 on weekdays and at 19.45 from Kochi. However there is an extra flight from Kochi on Mondays at 11.50. There is no service on Saturdays and Sundays.

「広島の心へのガイド」

　原爆資料館は、その４４年の歴史の中で初めて図録を出版した。この本は、日本語、英語併記で書かれており、原爆の悲劇を伝えるとともに、資料館の手引きともなっている。この本の日本語の題名は「ヒロシマを世界に」、英語の題名は「Ｔｈｅ　Ｓｐｉｒｉｔ　ｏｆ　Ｈｉｒｏｓｈｉｍａ」となっている。Ａ４サイズで１２７ページあり、ふんだんに地図や図表、被爆前後の広島だけでなく、廃墟から復興された後の写真などが使われている。

　資料館の内部が見える図の後には原爆の悲劇が６章に渡って述べられており、それぞれの章が実際の資料館の原爆の実態を伝えるテーマに沿っている。分かりやすい言葉と詳しい図表によって書かれている。例えば、原爆投下前の軍事基地としての広島、アメリカの原子爆弾の開発、広島への実際の投下とその直後の様子、市の復興、核時代の始まり、広島の核廃絶への取り組みである。痛烈な写真もある。爆心地から６００メートル離れた場所にいた中学生の指のつめや皮膚、着ていた人の写真のある中学生の服、学生の炭化したお弁当箱などだ。この本には二言語で書かれた２つの地図が、別の封筒に入ってついている。１つは平和公園とその周辺の詳細な地図で、もう一つは被爆した建造物と４７本の樹木の場所を記した地図である。

「四国へ海をこえて　１」

　もうすぐ広島から四国へ行く陸路での旅がより便利になるだろう。尾道と今治を結ぶ瀬戸内しまなみ海道の開通もあと１カ月を残すばかりとなった。スタッフは操業予定の６つの料金所の操作の訓練を受けている。この新しいスタッフの多くが、船の仕事を解雇された人たちだ。

「四国へ海をこえて　２」

　４月１日からは、広島と四国を結ぶ空の旅も便利になった。ジェイ・エアは広島−高知の新しいルートを開設した。平日は７時３５分に広島西飛行場を出発し、１９時４５分に高知を出発する。だが、高知からは、毎週月曜日１１時５０分の便もある。土、日は運行されない。
