Feeling the Classroom Pinch

Along with Tsukuba University, just north of Tokyo, Hiroshima University has long been renowned as one of the places in Japan to train to be a teacher. The university has two training faculties: the Faculty of Education trains senior high school teachers in various disciplines and the Faculty of School Education trains elementary and junior high school teachers. However, both faculties are experiencing severe problems in the face of the sharp decline in numbers of graduates who can find jobs in the teaching profession.

The days when university graduates could just walk into a job have long passed, but the change has been felt in the education faculties more than in the university as a whole. In the Faculty of School Education, with an annual intake of 350 students, only 35.5% of graduating students had found jobs (as of March 15, according to student reports). The figure in the Faculty of Education, with the intake of 341, was 57.2%. The numbers of students who found teaching jobs was very few. In the Faculty of School Education, only 56 students, out of 299 hopefuls, found jobs in elementary and junior high schools, and only 33 graduates from the Faculty of Education found jobs in senior high schools, out of 178 who applied. The unsuccessful students have no choice but to surf the waves of economic depression: bide their time, enter graduate school to improve their skills, or look for jobs in other areas.

To Shikoku on Two Wheels

A club in Onomichi has prepared an unusual booklet about cycling from Honshu to Shikoku. Unlike the highway connecting Honshu and Shikoku via the Seto Ohashi, which is a road and rail bridge, the entire length of the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido has special lanes set aside for pedestrians and cyclists. They can use all the bridges on the route except for the Shin Onomichi Ohashi. The Onomichi Cycling Club began preparing their guide to the new route last autumn. The 37-page, B5-size booklet sets out a model cycling course and explains all the places of danger along the route and also many places of interest. The booklet also advises on the best way for cyclists to cross the Onomichi Channel (go by ferry, because the Onomichi Ohashi has very narrow paths for pedestrians and cyclists). Good places for rest and refreshment are also covered.

The 80-km model route explained in guide does not keep to the expressway. However, detailed explanations are given on how to negotiate the country roads in the various islands traversed along the route ("Look for so-and so sign"; "Turn at so-and so junction"). 「教室に苦難の観」

　東京の北に位置する筑波大とともに、広島大は長い間日本における教員養成の場として知られてきた。広島大には２つの教員養成系学部がある。さまざまな教科ごとに分かれた高校教員養成の教育学部と、小・中学校教員養成の学部だ。しかし、両学部とも、教師になれる卒業生の数が大きく減るという深刻な悩みを抱えている。

　卒業しさえすれば就職できるという時代は終わったが、この変化は、大学の中でも特に教育系の学部で著しい。学校教育学部は、毎年３５０人の学生を受け入れているが、３月１５日付けの学生からの報告によるれば、就職できたのは３５・５％にすぎない。定員３４１人の教育学部では、５７・２％であった。うち教師になれる学生はわずかだった。学校教育学部では、２９９人の希望者に対し、小学校、中学校の先生になることができたのはたった５６人で、教育学部で高校の先生になることができたのは、希望者１７８人中３３人だった。就職できなかった学生には、不況の波の中を泳ぐしかない。すなわち、大学院に進学し知識を深めて好機を待つか、別の分野の仕事を探すかだ。

「二輪で四国へ」

　尾道市内のあるクラブが、本州から四国までのサイクリングに関するこれまでにない小冊子を用意した。自動車と列車の道路によって本州と四国を結ぶ瀬戸大橋と違い、瀬戸内しまなみ海道は全ての道に歩行者や自転車の専用レーンがある。歩行者や自転車に乗る人は、新尾道大橋以外の全ての橋を通ることができる。尾道サイクリングクラブは、昨年の秋から新しいルートを紹介する小冊子作成の準備を始めた。３７ページのＢ５版の小冊子は、モデルコースを紹介し、危険な場所やたくさんの見どころの説明を載せている。小冊子は尾道海峡を渡るもっとも良い方法もアドバイスしてくれる（尾道大橋は、自歩道が狭いのでフェリーを利用する）。トイレや休憩所も紹介している。

　小冊子に記された８０kmのルートは、高速道路と全く同じというわけではない。このルートを通って、さまざまな島の一般道を通り抜ける方法が詳しく説明されている（『○○の看板を目印に』『○○の交差点で曲がれ』などのように）。この小冊子は５００円で、０８４８−３７−２６４４へ電話すれば手に入れることができる。
