Yell Yell Ups & Downs

The Yell Yell A Kan, situated right opposite JR Hiroshima Station, duly opened for business on April 20. A ceremony was held at 12 noon on the 1st floor of the Fukuya department store, which occupies the greater part of the building, and a large freestanding clock was unveiled. Some 120,000 customers, mainly women, visited the "new face" of Hiroshima to do their shopping.

Unfortunately, things did not go so smoothly four days later. Around 2 pm on April 24, the Fukuya department store was plunged into darkness as the power went off. The lifts and escalators were not affected and the store was quietly evacuated with total absence of panic. The cause was traced to a loose bolt and was rectified by 8 in the evening.

The Yell Yell A Kan is connected to the Asse Building (that is, the Hiroshima Station Building) by means of an underground mall. An underground subway existed before, but it has been improved and enlarged. There is a wide open space which is suitable for holding events and part of this may be rented.

The redevelopment of the south side of Hiroshima Station occurs at a time of continuing economic difficulties for Hiroshima's major department stores. There are now seven such stores in the city and all except the two which have been newly opened reported decreasing sales in 1998 compared with sales the year before. The hardest hit was the Tenmaya main store in Hatchobori, with a decline of over 11%. The stores in Hatchobori are likely to feel the effects of the new development more than those in the commuter suburbs, like Al-Park and Midorii.

Final Departures

1. Office Depot, the large store selling office equipment and computer goods, is to close at the end of next month. The store,situated in Otemachi, opened in March last year. The parent company is based in Florida, USA, and made a cost-sharing agreement with Deodeo, the home electronics store. The development was viewed by competitors as another 'invasion of the black ships', but Deodeo ended the agreement in March and sales have been far less than anticipated.

2. Economic difficulties have served to end a long-established ferry service. The route between Hiroshima Port and Beppu, in Kyushu, was first opened in 1953. The Tsurumi made one leisurely trip daily between Hiroshima, Kure and Beppu. In 1970 a car ferry took over and the service is now operated by the Yufu. Owing to the opening of the new road links between Honshu and Shikoku, the service has become uneconomic and will end on May 31.

「エールエールのひと騒動」

　ＪＲ広島駅南口の右向いにある「エールエールＡ館」が、４月20日に正式オープンした。正午からは、建物の大部分を占める福屋の１階広場で除幕式があり、大きな置き時計がお目見えした。女性を中心とした約12万人の買い物客が、広島の「新しい顔」を訪れた。

　しかしあいにくなことに４日後、ことはスムーズに運ばなかった。４月24日午後２時ごろ、福屋で停電が起こり、中は暗闇に包まれた。エレベーターやエスカレーターは影響を受けなかったので大きな混乱はなく、買い物客らを静かに避難させた。原因は、ボルトの緩みとわかり、午後８時までには復旧した。

　エールエールＡ館は、広島駅ビル「ＡＳＳＥ」と地下モールで結ばれている。地下通路は以前からあったが、改築されて広くなった。この地下モールには、イベントができる広場もあり、一部が有料で貸し出されるという。

　広島駅南口の再開発は、広島の主なデパートの低迷が続く中、起きている。市内にはこのようなデパートが７店舗あり、最近オープンしたばかりの２店舗を除いて、軒並み、１９９８年度の業績が前年に比べて悪化している、と報告した。最もひどい打撃を受けているのは、中区八丁堀にある天満屋のメイン店舗で、11％以上の売上減となった。八丁堀地区のデパートは、西区の天満屋アルパーク店や安佐南区の天満屋緑井店など、郊外にある店舗と比べ、広島駅南口再開発の打撃を受けているようだ。

「最後の船出」

1　文具やコンピューター関連の商品を販売する「オフィス・デポ」が５月末に閉店する。大手町にあるこの店は、昨年３月にオープンした。米国のフロリダ州にある親会社が、家電販売の「デオデオ」と共同出資に合意した。同店が出店した時は、同業者にとって「黒船の来襲」のようだったが、デオデオが今年３月に合意を提携を解消。そして販売実績は、予想をはるかに下回っていた。

2　不況の影響で、長く続いたフェリーの営業が終わろうとしている。広島港と九州・別府を結ぶ航路は１９５３年に開業した。「つるみ」号が毎日１便ずつ、広島、呉と別府の間を、のんびりと運航していた。１９７０年にはカーフェリーになり、現在は「由布」号が航路をつないでいる。本州と四国を結ぶ新しい道路（しまなみ海道）の開通により、採算が見込めず、５月31日で運航を終える。
