Battle of the Books...

Hiroshima City now has four major bookstores. The largest store in the centre of the city is still Kinokuniya, which is located on the 6th floor of the Hiroshima Bus Centre building. The store has a stock of 500,000 books and a sales area of just under 2,000 sq. metres, but Kinokuniya now has intensifying competition from two other stores at Hiroshima Station. One is the largest store in the Chugoku-Shikoku region, rejoicing in the name Junk. This store, located on the 10th floor of the new Yell-Yell A Kan, has a stock of 800,000 books in a floor area of over 2,500 sq. m. Across the road in the Asse Station building is Kobunkan, a local company, which has increased its floor area to over 1,100 sq. m. and its stock to 400,000 volumes.

Across the city to the north is what used to be the largest bookstore in the Chugoku-Shikoku region until it was overtaken by Junk: the Futaba Tosho Megaten. This store has a floor area of 2,160 sq. m. and a stock of 700,000 books. The store is right next to the Hiroshima Interchange on the Sanyo expressway and so is perhaps the most convenient store for motorists coming from outside the city.

The total number of books available in the four large bookstores amounts to 2,400,000 volumes (over two books for each inhabitant of the city) and this does not include all the other smaller bookstores. Thus Hiroshima residents have access to a huge variety of different types of literature. They can no longer complain that they have nothing to read.

..and the Desktops

Another computer store has opened in Otemachi, Naka-ku. At present there are three large stores selling personal computers and related goods. The oldest is Deodeo's Com City, in Hondori. This was followed by Sogo's T-Zone and, situated directly opposite, the Sofmap Gigastore. On May 15, amid great fanfare, with crowds of prospective customers lining up outside, Hiroshima Gateway Country opened. Gateway is an American company based in South Dakota and the associated Japanese company has already opened similar stores in Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Sendai.

No Hits: No Runs

Whereas Sanfrecce have been generally moving upwards in the J-League and were in 4th place at the time of writing, the Carp baseball team's performance has been rather like a yo-yo. However, on May 8 pitcher Shinji Sasaoka scored the first no-hit no-run game of the season, as the Hiroshima Carp achieved a 4-0 victory over the Chunichi Dragons, at present the Central League leaders.

書店戦争

　広島市内には現在、４つの大きな書店がある。広島市中心部のもっとも大きな書店は、広島バスセンタービルの６階にある「紀伊国屋」である。50万冊のストックがあり、売り場面積は２０００平方メートルをやや下回る広さだ。しかし現在、広島駅ビルやその周辺にある２つの書店と、厳しい競争をしている。その１つは、中四国地方でもっとも大きい「ジュンク堂」という名の書店である。エールエールＡ館の10階にあるこの店は、２５００平方メートルを超える売り場に80万冊をそろえている。道路を渡ったところにある駅ビルアッセに入っているのが、地元の「広文館」。売り場面積を１１００平方メートルを超える広さに拡張し、40万冊のストックがある。

　広島市を北上すると、「ジュンク堂」が進出するまでは中四国地方で最大規模だった「フタバ図書メガ店」がある。この書店は２１６０平方メートルの売り場に70万冊のストックがある。山陽道広島ＩＣのすぐそばにあるので、市外から自動車で来る人にとっては、もっとも便利な店だろう。

　この４つの大きな書店にある本を合わせると２４０万冊に上り（市民１人当り２冊以上）、しかもこの数字には、ほかの小さな書店の在庫数を含んでいない。広島に住む人はこのように、膨大な数のさまざまな文献に触れることができるのだ。もうこれで「読むものがない」と文句をいうことはできない。

…そしてパソコン戦争

　新しいパソコンの店が中区大手町にできた。現在、パソコンや関連商品を販売する３つの大型店がある。もっとも古いのが、本通にあるデオデオの「コムシティー」である。これにそごうの「ティー・ゾーン」と、その真向かいにあるソフマップの「ギガストアー」が続く。５月15日、店外には予想通り、大勢の買い物客が長い列をつくり、ファンファーレが鳴り響く中「広島ゲートウェイカントリー」がオープンした。この店は、米国サウスダコタ州に本拠地を置く米系企業で、提携関係のある日本企業が、すでに東京、大阪、名古屋、仙台で、同じような店をオープンさせている。

ノーヒットノーラン

　サンフレッチェは常にＪリーグの上位へ上がっていっており、この原稿を書いている時点で４位にいる。一方、野球チームのカープはまるで上下に目まぐるしく動くヨーヨーのようだ。しかしながら８日、佐々岡真司投手が今シーズン初のノーヒットノーラン（無安打無得点試合）を記録し、現在セントラルリーグ首位の中日ドラゴンズに４対０で勝利を収めた。
