A famous Hiroshima resident passed away on Friday, June 25.
Dr.Tomin Harada was a surgeon who spent much of his life working for two related causes: the treatment of atomic bomb survivors and a world at peace with no nuclear weapons. Dr.Harada died peacefully at around 10 am of acute pneumonia at the hospital he himself founded. He was 87.
Dr.Harada served his country in World War II as a military doctor, being based in China and Taiwan. After returning to Japan in 1946, he began his medical practise and specialized in the treatment of keloids and other atomic-bomb related diseases. In 1955 he led the 'Hiroshima Maidens' on a tour of the United States. This was the name given to a group of 25 women who were suffering from keloid scars. In the USA, Dr. Harada met the American journalist Norman Cousins and spent the next year-and-a-half touring the USA explaining the incidence and treatment of diseases caused by radioactivity. Afterwards he teamed up with the peace activist Barbara Reynolds and became an ardent campaigner for world peace. In 1956, Dr.Harada helped to found the World Friendship Centre, which is situated in Minami-ku, Hiroshima, and became its first director. In 1989 Dr.Harada was made an Honorary Citizen of Hiroshima.
The town of Saijo, in Higashi-Hiroshima City, took on a distinctively festive and colourful appearance on June 27, when the students of Hiroshima University teamed up with local traders to hold the Yukata Festival. The festival, which started four years ago, had previously been held on the campus, but this year the main focus was the Shitami area of the town where a stage had been erected in the car park of a local supermarket. Bands played and local shops set up stalls. Various events were held, including a yukata contest and a firework display.
The new-style 'town and gown' event was judged a great success and Mr. Yoneoka, the president of the local trade association, said he hoped that joint efforts such as the festival would expand in the future.
A new feature of summer in Hiroshima is the 'Open Cafe Terrace', which is due to open for two months in August. Last year the cafe was set up on Peace Avenue, not far from the main Rijo-dori bus and tram route. The cafe will be open from 5 till 9.30 pm on weekdays and from 1 till 8.30 pm on weekends and holidays. The cafe will accommodate 160 persons and a variety of food and beverages will be served, including soft drinks and beer.
城山広島本店 Shiroyama is a traditional Japanese restaurant situated in Mimani-ku, just off a narrow, steep, road leading up to the top of Hijiyama. Opened in March this year, the restaurant surrounds a traditional Japanese garden and Hijiyama Jinja (Shrine) guards the entrance. The cuisine, in fact the entire menu, is built around tofu, or soyabean curd, which reaches the table in an amazing variety of disguises. 「原田医師が逝く」
６月25日金曜日、一人の有名な広島市民が逝った。原田東岷（とうみん）氏は、二つの大義に彼の人生の大半を費やした外科医だ。被爆者の治療と核兵器廃絶である。原田医師は午前10時頃、自身が設立した病院で急性肺炎のため亡くなった。87歳だった。
原田医師は第二次世界大戦中、中国や台湾を中心に軍医として国のために尽くした。1946年に日本に戻ってからは、ケロイドやその他の放射線による病気の治療、研究に努めた。1955年には「原爆乙女」をアメリカに連れて行った。原爆乙女とは、ケロイドの傷を負った25人の女性のことである。アメリカでは、アメリカのジャーナリスト、ノーマン・カズンズ氏に会い、その後１年半、放射線による病気の治療や影響の範囲の説明をしてアメリカをまわった。その後、原田氏は平和活動家バーバラ・レイノルズ氏と協力して、世界平和を目指し熱心な活動をした。1956年には、広島市南区にワールドフレンドシップセンターを設立、初代理事長に就任した。1989年には広島市名誉市民となった。
「夏が来る：１」
６月27日、東広島市の西条町は、広島大学の学生が地元商店会と協力してゆかたまつりを企画し、ちょっと変わった色とりどりのお祭りムードに包まれた。ゆかたまつりは４年前から始まったが、これまではキャンパス内でのみ行われていた。しかし今年はスーパーマーケットの駐車場にステージが設けられた下見地区がお祭りの中心となった。バンドが演奏し、地元の店が屋台を出した。ゆかたコンテストや花火など様々なイベントが行われた。
この新しい「町と大学」のイベントは大成功を納め、地元商店会の米岡会長は、このようなお祭りが今後も広がっていくよう協力したい、と話していた。
「夏が来る：２」
広島の夏の新しい風物は、８月からの２カ月間営業される「オープンカフェテラス」である。昨年は、バスや電車の通る鯉城通りからそう遠く離れていない平和大通りにオープンしていた。このオープンカフェテラスは、平日午後５時から９時半まで、週末や休日は午後１時から８時半までとなっている。オープンカフェテラスには１６０人が収容でき、様々な料理やソフトドリンク、ビールなどの飲み物が出される。
