Training Centre Opens

Earlier this month an unusual training centre was opened at Hiroshima Bunkyo Women's University, in Kabe, Asakita-ku. The Japanese name is Kokusai Kyoryoku Choseiin Kunren Senta and its aim is to train workers in disaster areas and refugee camps overseas. The centre has been established by a non-government organisation called the AMDA (Asian Medical Doctors Association), which held a symposium at the opening ceremony.

The ceremony was attended by about 180 persons including representatives and graduates of overseas aid groups for students and young people. The centre is a cooperative venture by universities and NGOs and is staffed by volunteers from six local universities. From this month study courses will begin in language & information skills, outdoor health care and motor maintenance.

Underground Access

Work is proceeding with the construction of the underground shopping mall in Kamiya-cho, which is due to open in the spring of 2001. The cruciform arcade runs for 390 metres along the east-west axis and for 225 metres along the north-south axis. In the central area, where the two axes meet, the Sogo department store will have an entrance to its 1st floor basement food hall. Sogo has now been joined by the Deodeo home electronics store, which will have an entrance to its personal computer department, also located in the 1st floor basement.

The decision to build a direct underground connection comes in the wake of the new development at Hiroshima Station, where the Fukuya department store has an underground entrance leading directly from the subway to the station.

The Kamiya-cho shopping mall will offer direct underground access to and from the Astramline, but there will be no similar access to the large number of office blocks which look out on to Kamiya-cho. There will, however, be access to ground level in 46 places, including the two tramcar stops in Kamiya-cho and the municipal baseball stadium.

Another Transport Plan

Yet another plan has been presented to solve Hiroshima's transportation problems, this time by the Hiroshima LRT Kenkyukai (LRT stands for Light Rail Transit). In addition to the extension of the Astramline south from Hondori to Shin-hukuromachi (near Heiwa-odori) and from Koiki-koen to Nishi-Hiroshima, the plan calls for new tramway systems to run from Nishi-Hiroshima to Honura-cho via Hiroshima Station, from Koi to Tokaichi-machi, and from Hakushima to Nagatsuka via Ushita.

  DINING OUT

Uno Vino is the name of an Italian restaurant in Minaga, Saeki-ku. Italian home cooking is the keynote and there is also an extensive wine list with over 40 items, some priced at as little as \500. One of the items on the menu is Aqua Pazza (\4,500 for two persons). The name means Crazy Water in Italian. Various kinds of seafood are cooked in an open pan over a high heat. Oil is poured over the mixture and the resulting reaction is the reason for the dish's name. Tel. (082) 922-7705.
