Such has been the success of the new Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, the new road linking Honshu and Shikoku via Onomichi and Imabari, that the highway authority is increasing the number of toll gates in preparation for the summer rush. The number of entry and exit lanes at four locations is being increased. At the Ikuchijima Kita I.C., one lane can be used both ways and so up to 5 lanes can be used by motorists leaving the highway. The Ikuchijima Minami I.C. and Oshima Kita I.C. are both to have two exit lanes added and the Imabari I.C. will have one lane added in each direction. It is hoped that these measures will help to lessen delays over the summer holiday period.
Motorists will have added reason to travel along the Shimanami Kaido in the late summer evenings, because the two bridges at either end of the highway are being illuminated. The Shin Onomichi Ohashi and the Kurushima Kaikyo Ohashi will have the lights turned on from dusk till 10 pm at various times till the end of August. Shin Onomichi Ohashi will be lit up at weekends and over the Bon holiday period, while the Kurushima Kaikyo Ohashi will be illuminated on August 7 & 8, during O-Bon and on Saturdays.
For the intended victims might well fight back. Earlier this month the Hiroshima-Kita police held a seminar at the Hiroshima Chuo Joshi Tandai, which is situated in Asaminami-ku. The theme of the seminar was taking measures against bag-snatching and being molested and 120 students took part. The seminar also included practical measures on how to escape from attackers and several police officers were in attendance to offer guidance to the students practising in pairs.
The prefectural railway police have also launched a campaign to stop such attacks in the vicinity of JR Hiroshima Station. Miss JR and women police officers, 18 persons in all, took part in the campaign, which included handing out leaflets. An advice centre has been set up on the 2nd floor of the shinkansen building at Hiroshima Station and advice via a telephone hot line is also available. The number to ring is (082) 263-0300.
The Hiroshima Stock Exchange is to close its doors next March and there are plans for a possible takeover by the Tokyo Stock Exchange. The number of transactions has declined and the exchange is making a loss. Discussions are continuing on the future of the 13 employees and the building etc.

「渋滞に備えて」
本州と四国をつなぐ新しい道路「瀬戸内しまなみ海道」（尾道−今治ルート）は現在のところ利用状況がよい。これに伴い、道路を管理する公団は、料金所の数を増やし、夏の渋滞に備えようとしている。４カ所の出入り口で料金所が増やされる予定である。生口島北インターでは、１つのレーンを出入りの両サイドから使用できるようにし、最大５つのレーンを高速道路を出ようとする車が利用できるようにする。生口島南インターと大島北インターでは、出口用レーンを２つずつ増やす予定で、今治インターでは、出口と入り口が１レーンずつ増える。この対策により、夏休み中の渋滞緩和が期待されている。
「ライトアップも予定・・・」
車の利用者が、夏の夜にしまなみ海道を走る理由がまた加わりそうだ。近いうちに、しまなみ海道の両端にある２つの橋でイルミネーションが施される。新尾道大橋と来島海峡大橋では、夕暮れ時から午後10時の間、8月末までのさまざまな機会にライトアップされることになる。ライトアップの日程は、新尾道大橋で週末とお盆中、来島海峡大橋で8月7・8日、お盆期間と各土曜日となっている。
「ひったくりさん、ご用心」
襲おうとした相手が逆襲するかも。今月初め、広島北署は安佐南区祇園の広島中央女子短大で講習会を開いた。講習会のテーマは、ひったくりと痴漢防止対策で、120人の生徒が受講した。講習会では暴漢から逃れるための実技指導もあり、出席した署員らが学生たちとペアになり模範指導をした。
また、広島県警鉄道警察隊も、JR広島駅付近で痴漢防止対策のキャンペーンを行った。ミスJRや警察隊の女性警察官ら18人が参加、チラシを配った。相談所は広島駅新幹線ビル2階に設置され、電話ホットラインによる相談が可能。電話番号は 082（263）0300。
「一切合財？」
広島証券取引所が来年の3月に閉鎖して、東京証券取引所に合併される見通しである。株式取引数は減少し、決算は赤字を抱えている。現在、職員13人の処遇や建物の処分などが検討されている。
