Manner Up, Hiroshima!

It is a common complaint among older people, of every culture and generation, that youngsters appear to lack manners. A series of lectures being given under the sponsorship of Hiroshima City Seishonen Centre aims to rectify this situation, at least as far as the city’s young people are concerned.

The lectures have been given for the past three years and have the general title of Nihon no Kokoro o shiru Koza. The kind of Japanese spirit in question is that exhibited, for example, by correct behaviour when giving new year greetings, or at weddings & funerals, or when handling money. The orientation session was attended by young men and women between the ages of 20 and 31. The lectures are given on Thursday evenings at the Seishonen Centre and the series ends on December 2. For those interested in attending, the telephone number to ring is (082) 228-0447.

The Ritz Closes

In Hiroshima, the Ritz is not a plush hotel, as in Paris and London, but a small cinema situated in the city’s red light district. After a 43-year span, the cinema finally closed its doors on October 15. The final show took place at 6.30 and for the first time in two years a queue of people stretched along Nagarekawa-dori, waiting to enter. According to the manager, the last time there was such a queue was for the film Evangelion, which was shown there in March 1997. However, in autumn of the same year a vast new cinema complex, with no less than seven screens, opened in Minami-ku and since then audiences have steadily declined.

Since the cinema opened in December 1956, over 2,000,000 people have seen films there.

Monumental Problem

Hiroshima is a city of rivers and bridges and one of the most important of the latter is the Ekimae-ohashi, which spans the Enkogawa and, for those arriving by train, is a kind of entrance gate to the city. The bridge has been under repair and reconstruction since 1991 and the expected completion date is March, 2001. However, a problem has arisen over the design of the bridge. Way back in 1988, a competition was held and designs invited with the general ‘image’ (very appropriate for Hiroshima), ‘of someone performing gassho and praying for peace’. The winning design was of a ‘monument’ pyramid, formed by girders rising from the four corners of the bridge and meeting in the centre above. The cost is \300 million. For reasons of cost, the city wants to scrap this design and substitute another, with lamp posts at each corner of the bridge, which would cost only \80 million.

  DINING OUT

Okonomiyaki, cooked in the local style rather than the Kansai way, is famous as a Hiroshima dish. Local shops, in quiet city streets, are the places to go and Hirano is such a shop located in Minami-machi, Minami-ku (the Chinese characters are not the same), close to Hiroshima University’s medical and dental schools. One of the distinctive features of Hirano is the menu. One’s pancake can be topped with a variety of items, including rice and the sticky fermented soyabeans called natto. The soba, rice & natto variety costs \600.
