Last month the Ritz cinema closed its doors, but this does not mean that the cinema in Hiroshima is dying. In addition to the multi-screen complex in Danbara, there will soon be four cinemas in Hiroshima of a genre known as ‘art mini-theatres’, specialising in ‘Shibuya films’, that is, films with a definite accent on style and fashionable taste. In Hiroshima, the pioneer of this type of mini-theatre is the Salon Cinema in Ote-machi. There are film theatres in this building, and film fans come from as far away as Yamaguchi, Okayama and Shimane. A third cinema, the Cine-Twin, is in Hondori. Later this month the Yokogawa Cinema, which used to show adult films, will open its doors again as a mini-theatre. Yokogawa has many apartment complexes and a high population of young people, who are a potential audience for the ‘art-type’ films which will be shown.

Jets for Commuters?

Hiroshima Nishi-Hikojo (West Airport) is the scene of a thriving air commuter operation. J-Air operates the services using 19-seater propeller-driven planes, but plans to substitute jet operation by 2001. The company, which operates services to various destinations from Hiroshima,Nagoya and other airports, cited environmental considerations for wanting to change, but similar environmental considerations led Hiroshima City to promise local residents that jet planes would not use the airport. In addition, the runway would have to be shortened by about 350 metres if the elevated section of the Hiroshima Minami-Doro is built on the northern side of the airport. The prefecture and the city are now thinking of ways to solve the problem.

Cycles for Rent

At the end of last month Hiroshima City & Prefecture joined forces with the Construction Ministry and set up four locations in the city where bicycles can be rented for free. The four locations are the car parks at Yale-Yale A Kan, Parco, the shopping arcade at the south exit of JR Yokogawa Station, and Motomachi CRED. The bicycles can be dropped off at any one of these locations. There are 120 cycles for rent over a 3-week period and they are available to anyone over 18 who can provide proof of identity. The hours of use are 10 am till 4 pm on weekdays and 9 am till 7 pm at weekends and on holidays.

Hiroshima City previously began a ‘renta-cycle’ scheme over four years ago, but just from one location: JR Nishi-Hiroshima Station.However, not many people have used the scheme and so it is hoped that having four locations will attract more users.

「消える映画館、産声上げる映画館」

　先月、映画館「リッツ」が閉館したが、広島の映画館が衰退の一途をたどっているわけではない。南区段原にできたシネマコンプレックスに加え、「アート系ミニシアター」と呼ばれる種類の映画館はまもなく４館に増える。そこでは、流行を意識した「シブヤ（渋谷）系映画」などを専門に上映する。広島では、このようなミニシアターの先駆けは、大手町の「サロンシネマ」だ。ビル内に複数の映画館があり、映画ファンははるばる山口、岡山、島根県からもやってくる。３つ目の映画館「シネツイン」は本通りにある。今月末には、成人映画を上映していた「横川シネマ」がミニシアターに衣替えする。横川地区にはアパート群があり、若者も多く、彼らはここで上映される「アート系」作品の客層として期待されている。

「コミューター機をジェット機に？」

　広島西飛行場は、（小型旅客機の）コミューターの運航が盛んだ。ジェイ・エアは19人乗りプロペラ機を運航しているが、２００１年までにジェット機に変える計画をたてている。同社は広島、名古屋などから各地に運航しており、機種交換のための環境整備に言及する。しかし市は住民に、同飛行場にはジェット機を乗り入れないと約束している。加えて、高架式の広島南道路が飛行場北側に建設される場合、滑走路を３５０メートル短くしなくてはならない。県と市は現在、この問題を検討中だ。

「レンタサイクル」

　先月末、広島市と県は建設省と協力して、自転車を無料で借りられる場所を市内４カ所に設けた。場所はエールエールＡ館、パルコ、ＪＲ横川駅南口商店街入口と基町クレド。自転車はこれらのどこで乗り捨ててもよい。自転車１２０台が置かれ、利用期間は３週間。18歳以上で身分証明書を出せばレンタルできる。利用時間は平日午前10時から午後４時まで、週末と祝日は午前９時から午後７時まで。　広島市は４年以上も前から「レンタサイクル」事業を行っているが、ＪＲ西広島駅１カ所のみだった。ここの利用者はあまりいないが、４カ所ならもっと多くの人に使ってもらえるのではないか、と期待されている。
