11.11, 11.11.11

Which stands for eleven minutes past eleven, am, on the eleventh of November in the eleventh year of Heisei.

Various enterprising shops in Hiroshima took advantage of the rare convergence of ones in the calender and offered special menus or special prices, usually in ones. A ramen shop in Shintenchi, Hiroshima, opened on November 11 at precisely 11 minutes and 11 seconds after 11 o’clock and the ramen on the menu, usually costing \550, was offered for \111. Not surprisingly, customers were queueing up at opening time.

As early as 5.30 am, when the booking offices opened at JR Hiroshima Station, people were beginning to buy special commemorative platform tickets. Queues began to form around 7 am and 3,400 tickets had been sold by 8.20. JR was planning to open a special counter from 9 onwards. JR put on sale 10,000 commemorative platform tickets at Hiroshima, Mihara, Kure, Iwakuni and other stations, but by 9 am all had been sold.

Of course, the combination of ones is much easier to achieve with the Japanese dating system, based on reigning Emperors, than with the western system. The last combinations of ones occurred in the Middle Ages, on November 11, 1111 and the combination will occur again in 9,112 years time.

In Japan, however, we will only have to wait till the eleventh year of the reign of the present Emperorﾕs successor.

Ancient & Modern

Danbara used to be a haven for collectors of antiques and bric-a-brac, but shops disappeared after the area was rebuilt. However, some shops are reappearing, not only in Danbara, but also in a new and unusual location: Hiroshima West Airport, in Nishi-ku. The airport’s Maple Plaza is the location of eight shops specialising in antique furniture and bric-a-brac, all run by former company employees and housewives. The proprietors are all ‘antique’ enthusiasts and aim to create the ‘new’ atmosphere of Danbara.

Before the move to Hongo-cho, the airport building in Kanon was full of ticket desks, waiting rooms, souvenir shops, and passengers. Now 150 sq. metres of space on the 1st floor of the airport building is given over to the display of over 5,000 items: there are miscellaneous goods, furniture, toys, dolls, model aeroplanes (of course): almost everything is there.

In addition to antique fanatics, the shops in Kotto-Mura are patronised by commuters using the airport and for those who find weekday antique hunting difficult, a flea market is held in the airport car park on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of each month.

「11.11,11.11.11」

　この数字は、平成11年11月11日の午前11時11分を表している。広島ではいろいろな店が、暦上めったに起こらない１の並びを利用して、１の並んだ特別なメニューを出したり、値段をつけた。新天地のラーメン店は、11月11日のちょうど11時11分11秒にオープン。通常550円のラーメンを111円でふるまった。客がオープンを待ち構え、列を作ったのも当然だ。ＪＲ広島駅では、みどりの窓口が開く午前５時半には、早くも記念入場券を買い求める人が姿を見せ始めた。午前七時ごろには人々が並び始めた。ＪＲは午前九時以降は臨時の販売窓口を設ける予定にしていたが、計三千四百枚の記念入場券は午前８時20分には完売した。ＪＲは広島、三原、呉、岩国とその他の駅で、記念入場券を計一万枚を用意したが、午前９時までにはすべて売り切れた。

　もちろん、暦で１の数字が並ぶことは、西洋の暦制度よりも、天皇の在位期間に基づく日本の暦制度のほうが起こりやすい。（西暦では）１の組み合わせが最後にあったのは、中世の1111年11月11日で、次回は9112年も後になる。しかしながら、日本では現天皇の皇位継承者の在位が11年目を迎えるのを待つだけでいい。

「アンティークとモダン」

　段原は古い美術品や骨とう品の収集家たちの憩いの街だったが、再開発の後、そのような店がなくなってしまったことがあった。だがいくつかの店が段原だけでなく、新しい場所や一風変わった所、（例えば西区の広島西飛行場に）再び姿を見せている。飛行場のメイプルプラザには、元会社員や主婦らが開いたアンティーク家具と骨とう品を専門にする八店舗が並ぶ。店主たちは全て熱烈な骨とうファンで、段原の新しい風をつくろうとしている。

　（広島空港が）本郷町へ移転する前は、観音町の空港ビルはチケット・カウンターや待ち合い室、おみやげ店、乗客でいっぱいだった。現在空港ビル１階、150平方メートルのスペースは5000点を超える骨とう品の展示場所となっている。雑貨、おもちゃ、人形やもちろん飛行機のプラモデルと、ほとんどすべてのものがそろっている。

　店は熱心な骨とうファンに加え、「骨董村」の店は、飛行機での通勤者にもよく利用されている。また平日に骨とう品探しができない人のためには、毎月第４土曜日と日曜日、飛行場の駐車場で、のみの市が開かれている。
