gMay all the hopes and dreams for 2000 come to passh. Such was the general feeling last month, when a new and very important occupant of the square in front of the Pacela shopping complex in Motomachi reminded everyone that Christmas is not far away. On November 17, for the sixth year running, a large Christmas tree, 13 metres high and adorned with hundreds of fairy lights, was placed in the square and a ceremony to switch the lights was held in front of an appreciative audience of 400 shoppers. The ceremony was performed by Kenjiro Nomura and colleagues from the Hiroshima Carp baseball team. A senior high school student from Inokuchi said she hoped the coming year would be gbrighth, like the lights on the tree.
The early Christmas spirit did not seem much in evidence in Chuo-dori recently, when gangs of young hoodlums clashed with the Kidotai, or riot police. The occasion was the Ebisu-ko, the large festival held annually under the auspices of a neighbouring shrine. In the evening, Chuo-dori was closed to traffic and the whole area became a pedestrian precinct. At some point young people began throwing bottles and cans and at one point it looked as if a riot would break out on the street. The riot police charged a group of about 50 hoodlums and arrested 38 young persons on suspicion of obstruction. After the arrests the violence appeared to escalate and a group of young people rushed at the police and threw cans and bottles.
The annual festival has become an occasion for young gangster groups to gather and strut their stuff. This year the prefectural police decided to take strong measures.
Hot on the heels of problems caused by objects falling from tunnel walls, JR has been plagued with another problem: the cracking and fracturing of train windows. The recent rash of incidents appears to be a new trend, but it is not: there have been a total of 1,477 cases of shinkansen train windows shattering since 1996. The figure relates to the three companies which operate the five shinkansen lines and the annual total exceeds 400 cases. A fair proportion of the cases occur on the Sanyo Shinkansen, which is operated by JR West Japan. The causes are varied. The track bed is composed of ballast and the stones are sometimes thrown upwards. When trains meet at speed in tunnels, the strong wind generated can cause hairline cracks. The transport ministry has instructed the companies to take appropriate measures to deal with the problem.
Beans Cafe
Beans Cafe is a edessert cafef situated in Fukuro-machi, Naka-ku, just along a street running parallel to Hondori. The most popular item on the menu is Creme BrulŽ (\400), a European style dessert made with fresh cream and eggs, with a topping of burnt caramel. This is usually served with Capucino coffee (total, \700). In addition to the extensive dessert menu, there are about 100 varieties of alcoholic drinks available, from cocktails to wine.
