Light at the End...

Of the tunnel? Not yet for JR West Japan. A recent general inspection of the tunnels on the Sanyo shinkansen revealed no less than 40,000 places where there was something unusual. The inspection consisted of tapping the surface of the tunnel with hammers and noting the resulting sound. There are 142 tunnels on the entire line, covering a total distance of 280 kilometres and JR decided that at 10,000 of the places repairs were necessary. Most of the places needing repair were in tunnels located in Hiroshima and Yamaguchi Prefectures. The repairs would be completed by the end of the year.

...Of the Street?...

The year 2000 is rapidly approaching and local residents and enterprises are taking advantage of this as they prepare for Christmas. All over the city streets and buildings are being illuminated. Houses in Inokuchi-dai, Nishi-ku, have been lit with fairy lights and this gives a ‘Christmassy’ air to the whole street. Namiki-dori, in Naka-ku, has been graced with unusual creatures such as the legendary kirin, illuminated, of course, and also a large illuminated sign bearing the legend ‘2000’. The Hotel Granvia Hiroshima has a whole panel of fairy lights adorning the front of the building, which come and go off in sequence. Santa Claus rings his bells and winged cherubs come flying through the sky.

Of course, the illuminations, especially those in the central shopping areas, have an additional effect. They are a reminder to customers to complete their Christmas shopping.

...Not for the Homeless

Like Tokyo and other large cities, Hiroshima has its share of homeless people and their numbers have been steadily increasing. The city did a random check on November 1 and found that there were 115 people living in the city streets, more than three times the number in 1993.

The homeless need shelter and so tend to congregate in subways and underground passages. Around 9 pm the subways around Hiroshima Station tend to fill with cardboard structures, as around 40 or 50 homeless people seek a place for the night. One 50-year-old man said he had come from Osaka. His job had disappeared after the completion of the rebuilding necessitated by the Kobe earthquake and he was unable to find other work. Places like Hiroshima Station and the Peace Memorial Park are the ‘face’ of Hiroshima City, but the presence of homeless people in such places, living in their makeshift cardboard dwellings, is a reminder that in Japan, also, the world’s second largest economy, there are ‘have-nots’ as well as ‘haves’.

　トンネルは抜けられるのか？JR西日本には、まだ光が見えていないようだ。山陽新幹線のトンネルを最近総点検したところ、四万カ所で異常が見つかった。点検ではトンネルの表面をハンマーでたたき、どのような音がするか調べられた。総延長二百八十の全線には百四十二のトンネルがあり、ＪＲ西日本はそのうち一万カ所で、修理が必要だと判断した。修理が必要な個所の大半は、広島、山口両県のトンネル。修理工事は今年度中に完了する予定だ。

通りでは？

　2000年がすぐそこに迫ってきた。市民や商店はクリスマスの準備をしながら、これに便乗している格好だ。町中の通りや建物にはイルミネーションが施されている。西区井口台の住宅街では豆電球が照らされ、通り全体にクリスマスの雰囲気が漂っている。中区の並木通りでは、伝説上のキリンのように変わった動物たちが電飾されている。もちろん、2000年紀を記念する大きな文字も電飾されている。ホテル・グランヴィア広島では、豆電球の電版がビルの前を飾り、点滅を繰り返している。サンタクロースはベルをならし、翼のはえた天使は空を飛んでやってくる。

　もちろん、中央商店街などのイルミネーションには別の効果もある。つまりクリスマスの買い物を客に促す効果もあるのだ。

ホームレスには...

　広島には、東京や他の大都市のようにホームレスが存在し、その数は徐々に増えている。広島市は十一月一日に任意で調査し、百十五人が路上で生活していることがわかった。その数は1993年の三倍以上にもなる。

　ホームレスはしのぐ場所を求めて、地下道などに群れがちだ。午後九時ごろには、およそ40、50人のホームレスが夜過ごす場所を得ようとし、広島駅付近の地下街が段ボールハウスでいっぱいになる。ある50歳の男性は、大阪からやってきたという。阪神大震災の復旧作業が終わると職を失い、他の仕事を見つけられずにいる。広島駅や平和記念公園といった場所は広島市の顔だ。しかし、そのような場所にもホームレスがいて、一時しのぎの段ボールハウスで生活しているということは、世界で二番目の経済大国である日本にも、「持つ者」だけでなく「持たざる者」もいるという証だ。
