Hot on the heels of his promotion to the post of Deputy President of Mazda, on December 15 Mark Fields found himself in the driving seat of the company, when he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) in succession to James Miller. Miller, 53, cited health and personal reasons for his resignation from the presidency and the board of directors.
Fields has an MBA from Harvard Business School (he was among the top 3 graduating in his year) and joined the Ford Motor Company in 1989 and later the Argentina operation. He came to Mazda in 1998 as senior managing director in charge of marketing and sales. He was appointed Vice-President on December 1 and held that post for just two weeks: probably the shortest time in the company’s history.
Fields, who is 15 years younger than his predecessor, emphasised at a press conference on the day of his appointment that in business it was experience and acumen that counted, not age. He stated that he would continue with the company’s restructuring and work for greater operational efficiency and improvement of the Mazda brand image. Mark Fields lives in Minami-ku, Hiroshima, with his wife and children, but he complained that pressure of work does not actually allow him to spend much time with his family.
Akira Eto, who used to be the third baseman of the Carp baseball team, has finally joined the Yomiuri Giants. The Carp, however, recently signed on a promising young draftee in the person of 17-year-old Takaya Kawauchi. Kawauchi is 189 cm tall and weights 80 kg. He pitches and bats with the left hand. The signing fee was \100 million and his starting salary will be \7 million. Kawauchi’s salary is minuscule, however, in comparison with that of his sempai at the Seibu Lions. Daisuke Matsuzaka received \13 million in his first year with the team, but he recently signed on for a second year at a salary of \70 million.
There are signs that the Crown Princess is pregnant, after six-and-a-half years of marriage. Princess Masako showed signs of morning sickness recently and tests carried out after the princess returned from Belgium, where she attended the wedding of Crown Prince Philippe, proved positive. If the pregnancy is confirmed and if the child is male, the baby will be the Emperor’s first grandson and second in line to the Japanese imperial throne.

「夢のフィールド？」
マーク・フィールズ氏は、マツダの副社長に昇格してすぐ、12月15日にマツダの運転席に座ることになった。ジェームス・ミラー氏の後を継いで、社長と最高経営責任者（CEO）に任命されたのだ。53歳のミラー氏は、健康面と個人的な理由から社長と取締役会を退くことになった。
フィールズ氏はハーバード大学のビジネススクールで経営学修士課程（ＭＢＡ）を修了（卒業生のトップ３に入る成績だった）、1989（平成元）年にフォードに入社、後にフォードアルゼンチン社長となった。98年にマツダの専務となり、マーケティング、販売などを担当した。12月1日にはマツダの副社長に任命され、わずか2週間の任期を務めた：おそらく会社の歴史において最短記録だろう。
フィールズ氏は、前任者よりも15歳若いが、就任時の記者会見では、ビジネスで重要なのは年齢ではなく、経験と洞察力であると強調。マツダのリストラを続行し、経営の効率化をさらに進めて、ブランドイメージの向上に取り組むことを表明した。
マーク・フィールズ氏は広島市南区に妻と子ども２人と暮らしているが、仕事のプレッシャーで、家族との時間を十分に持てないのが不満と話している。

広島カープの三塁手だった江藤智（えとう・あきら）選手はついに、読売ジャイアンツに入団することになった。しかしカープは最近、将来有望な河内貴哉（かわうち・たかや）選手（17歳）と契約。河内選手は189cm、80kg、左投げ左打ち。契約金は１億円、初年度の年俸は700万円にもなる。しかし、河内選手の年俸は、西武ライオンズの先輩と比べるとわずかなものだ。松坂大輔選手（西武）は1年目の年俸は1300万円だったが、二年目は7000万円で契約にサインをした。
「特別なクリスマスプレゼント」
ご結婚から約６年半、皇太子妃（雅子さま）に懐妊の兆候がみられている。雅子さまは、最近つわりの徴候があり、フィリップ皇太子の結婚式に出席したベルギーから帰国後、実施した検査で陽性反応が出たという。懐妊が確認され、お子さまが男子であれば、天皇陛下にとって最初の男孫で、皇位継承順位第二位（の皇族）となる。
