1 January 2000 in London

The new millennium was welcomed all over the world with firework displays, street parties and other events. The celebrations in London, UK, were particularly spectacular, with a huge fun fair on the Mall, the avenue leading to Buckingham Palace, the London residence of Queen Elizabeth. From 5 pm on December 31, the entire centre of London was closed to traffic and became a pedestrian precinct. The only way in was by public transport. Nevertheless, over two million people converged on Trafalgar Square, where a huge party was held, and on the banks of the River Thames. As Big Ben, the clock on the houses of Parliament, struck midnight, a huge firework display began on the river, using nearly 40 tons of fireworks. In the Millennium Dome, overlooking the river, a spectacular Millennium Show was staged, attended by the Queen, members of the government and 10,000 guests. The Dome, which will be open all through 2000, is a vast enclosed theme park, with a huge variety of different features and activities.

The Elderly on the Road

The police in three townships in Yamagata-gun are perplexed at a spate of traffic accidents involving elderly drivers. Since February last year seven persons between the ages of 71 and 89 have died in traffic accidents. All the accidents have happened within a short distance of the victims' homes.

For example, on November 23 last year, an elderly couple were killed a mere 150 metres from their home in Chiyoda-cho. The 80-year-old driver was making a right turn but he hit an oncoming truck. His 73-year-old wife was in the passenger seat. Rain was falling at the time and the police speculated that the driver decided to use his car even though the distance was short.

The three townships are Chiyoda, Toyohira and Oasa and the combined population is 19,000. However, 30% are elderly and would rely on the local bus network for shopping, hospital visits and such like. But the local bus network runs at a huge loss. The deficit for the 1998 fiscal year was \52 million and so it is unlikely that local bus services will be increased. So the elderly will have to rely on their driving skills...

Don't Catch the 'Flu!

Hospitals in Hiroshima and other centres in the Chugoku region have virtually no stocks of influenza vaccine, and so are unprepared to cope with any outbreaks which might arise in 2000. This is especially bad news for the elderly, who are most at risk from the disease. It is to be hoped that no major epidemics will strike Japan in the early part of 2000.

「ロンドンの　２０００年の元旦」

　新しい千年紀の到来は、世界中で花火や路上の催しなど、さまざまなイベントで歓迎された。イギリスのロンドンでの祝賀イベントはとりわけ盛大で、エリザベス女王の住居、バッキンガム宮殿に通じる散歩道（The　Mall）は、巨大な遊園地のようになった。12月31日の午後５時から、ロンドンの市街地全体が車両通行止めになり、歩行者天国が現れた。公共交通機関でだけ、市街に入ることができた。

　にもかかわらず、200万人を超える人々が大規模なパーティーが開催されたトラファルガー広場とテムズ川岸に集まった。国会議事堂の時計台ビッグベンが夜中の12時を打つと、川の上では約40�dもの火薬を使った花火のショーが始まった。川を見渡せるミレニアム・ドームの中では、豪華なミレニアムショーが行われ、エリザベス女王を始め、政府の官僚や一万人の客が出席した。2000年中、オープンしているドームは囲いのある広いテーマパークになっていて、多くの催し物や活動が実施される。

「高齢者運転」

　山県郡にある３つの町の警察は、高齢の運転手たちを巻き込んだ交通事故の多さに、当惑している。昨年２月以来、71歳から89歳までの７人（３町在住者）が、交通事故で亡くなった。すべての事故が、自宅からそう遠くないところで起きた。

　たとえば昨年11月23日、ある老夫婦が千代田町の自宅からわずか150�bの場所で亡くなった。80歳の運転手が、右折しようとして対向してきたトラックに衝突。73歳の妻が、助手席に座っていた。事故当時は雨が降っていたため、警察は、わずかな距離でも車を使おうとしたのだろう、と見ている。

　三つの町とは千代田、豊平と大朝町で、人口は合わせて一万九千人。そのうち三割がお年寄りで、買い物や病院への行き来は、ローカルバスが頼りだ。しかし、ローカルバスは経営危機に陥っている。1998年度は、5200万円の赤字で、増便は考えられない。そのため、高齢者も自分の運転技術に頼らざるを得ない状況になっている。

「インフルエンザにかからないように！」

　広島や他の中国地方の医療機関には、インフルエンザワクチンのストックがほとんどなく、つまり2000年に発生する可能性のある流感への対処の方法がない。これはインフルエンザにかかりやすいお年寄りにとって特に悪いニュースだ。2000年の前半に、インフルエンザが日本で猛威を振るわないように祈るしかない。
