New Shimanami-Kaido?

At 5 pm on Tuesday, January 18, the new Akinada-ohashi was opened to the general public. The new bridge connects the island of Shimo-kamagari with the main island (Honshu). It is also the sixth bridge to be built in a network of bridges linking eight islands in the Seto Inland Sea. When completed these bridges will afford a scenic route through the area which can be called a second Shimanami-Kaido, after the new scenic route which links Onomichi City with Imabari City in Ehime Prefecture.

The opening ceremony took place from 10 am and was attended by some 500 guests, after which some families walked across the bridge from the Honshu end at Kawajiri-cho, Toyota-gun. On the other side of the 1,175m bridge, at Shimo-kamagari-cho, Aki-gun, there was another ceremony at which Mr Yuzan Fujita, Governor of Hiroshima Prefecture, gave a speech.

The two-lane bridge, which has space for pedestrians and cyclists, who can cross without charge, is a toll bridge, with a tollgate at Kawajiri, on a spur road connected to National Route 185. Tolls are \700 for ordinary vehicles and \550 for small vehicles, with major discounts for up to 100 journeys across the bridge.

The new bridge is an important link in a chain of bridges connecting the isands of Shimo-kamagari, Kamagari, Toyo, Osaki-shimo, two other tiny islands, Okamura, and Osaki-kami. Of the two remaining bridges to be built, one is under construction and the other is in the planning stage.

Murder in Hakushima

Early in the morning of Thursday, 20 January, a 16-year-old girl was found with multiple stab wounds in a pedestrian underpass adjacent to National Route 54 in Hiroshima City. She died shortly after being taken to hospital. The incident has given rise to new fears about the ‘dangerous safety’ afforded by pedestrian underpasses, which are usually deserted at night.

The incident occurred in the underpass at the junction of Johoku-dori and Route 54 at Nishi-Hakushima. The girl, Ms. Kozue Kumai, who lived locally, had got out of a taxi at a place almost opposite her home and had then gone to a nearby convenience store. She was found by a passerby around 3.50 am in the underpass.

Police have discovered that just before she was discovered, Ms. Kumai had talked by telephone to a female friend, to whom she had promised to talk the following day about a “very important matter” and seek advice. The incident has caused teachers of children attending the nearby elementary schools to have them go home from school in groups.

「新しいしまなみ海道？」

　１月18日火曜日の午後５時、新しい安芸灘大橋が開通し、（一般の人々への）供用が開始された。新しい橋は下蒲刈町の島と本州を結ぶ。これは、（芸南地方の）瀬戸内海８つの島を結ぶ架橋のうち、６つ目の橋になる。すべてが完成すれば、第二の「しまなみ海道」――近ごろ完成した尾道市と愛媛県を結ぶ景色が美しい道――と呼ばれるような景色のよいルートになるだろう。

　開通式は午前10時から始まり、約５００人の招待客が参加した。その後、何世帯かの家族が橋の本州側の末端、豊田郡川尻町から橋を渡った。総延長１１７５�bの橋の先、安芸郡下蒲刈町では、広島県知事の藤田雄山氏があいさつした別の式典が開かれた。

　この２車線（片側１車線）の橋は歩行者と自転車が無料で渡れるスペースもあるが、有料の橋。国道185 号に合流する支線上の川尻側に、料金所が一カ所設けてある。料金は普通車７００円、軽自動車５５０円で、先着１００人の利用者には大幅な割引きがある。

　この新しい橋は、下蒲刈島、蒲刈島、豊島、大崎下島、そして他の２つの小島である岡村島と大崎上島をつなぐ架橋構想の重要な結合部分となる。完成予定の残り２橋のうち１つは建設中で、１つは計画段階にある。

「白島地区での殺人事件」

　１月20日木曜日の未明、広島市の国道54号に隣接する地下道で、体を何か所も刺されている１６歳の少女が発見された。少女は病院に運ばれると間もなく死亡した。この事件は、夜は通常人通りが少ない地下道の「危険な安全性」（注・車にひかれる心配が無いかわりに、夜に人通りが少なくなると密室状態になる危険が発生するということ）に関する新たな不安を人々に引き起こしている。

　事件は西白島町の国道54号と城北通りが交わる交差点の近くで起きた。熊井梢さんは現場近くに住み、彼女の家のほぼ向かい側でタクシーから降りて、近くのコンビニエンスストアに立ち寄った。彼女は午前３時50分ごろ、地下道で通行人によって発見された。

　警察によると、彼女が発見される直前に、友人の女性に電話し、「とても重要な事柄」について話す約束をし、アドバイスを求めていたことがわかっている。

　この事件で、近所の小学校は児童を集団下校させることを決めた。
