Teams from the Chugoku region did not do too badly, with Hiroshima and Yamaguchi coming 2nd and 4th, respectively. This stellar performance was balanced, however, by the other three Chugoku teams. Shimane came 34th, closely followed by Okayama at 35th and Tottori managed 38th place.
The race was run in 7 stages over a 48-km distance with the start and finish on Heiwa-odori in front of the Peace Memorial Museum. Early on in the race Hyogo Prefecture took the lead with Syuichi Fujii fighting off a challenge from Kiyoharu Sato of Nagano Prefecture. From the 4th stage, however, Ryuji Sorayama from Hiroshima Prefecture took the lead, only to be overtaken by Ryuichi Hashinoguchi from Kagoshima Prefecture. The lead increased and Satoshi Irifune finished the race in 2 hours 19 minutes and 52 seconds, beating Hiroshima's anchor Shigeru Aburaya by nearly one minute. Hyogo and Nagano managed 5th and 8th place, respectively.
There has probably never been a better time to fly to Tokyo than now. All three airlines are offering cut-price tickets. All-Nippon Airways are offer ing the run of its domestic route network for just \10,000 one-way. There are conditions, however. Tickets must be reserved two months in advance and the bargain rates are available only from April 17 to 23 and on May 1 and June 1. Japan Airlines will offer a 15% discount on tickets booked via the Internet or via NTT's cellular phones. This scheme will come on line from the middle of May and will last one month. Finally, Japan Air System has a special fare for journeys departing or arriving on Monday or Tuesday. The reduction is 60%. Of course there are conditions, such as making reservations two months in advance. The airlines are mindful of the threat posed by JR, especially on routes like Tokyo-Hiroshima. In March, JR plans to introduce the Hikari Rail Star, a new type of Shinkansen with 2x2 seating, compartments and computer access points. The competition between rail and air is set to become more severe.
The basic structure of the underground shopping mall, currently being built under Kamiya-cho, is almost completed. The shopping arcade is scheduled to open in the spring of 2001. What: The full title of this exhibition is Masterpieces of Japanese-style Painting from the Yamatane Museum of Art. The exhibits are grouped according to 4 themes: scenery; flowers and living things; the human figure; and fictional and historical events.

「ひろしま駅伝」
第５回ひろしま男子駅伝が１月23日の日曜日、開催された。47都道府県全てからチームが参加した。
中国地方のチームはよくやった。広島と山口がそれぞれ、2位と４位に入るなど、結果は悪くなかった。しかし、この好成績も他の3つの中国地方のチームと合わせると平均的なものとなる。島根が34位、そのすぐ後に岡山の35位が続き、鳥取は38位に入った。
レースは原爆資料館前の平和大通りを発着地点とする7区間、48キロで競われた。レースの初めは、兵庫・藤井周一選手が長野・佐藤清治選手を抑え、好スタートを切った。4区からは、広島・空山隆児選手が首位を走ったが、結局、鹿児島・橋ノ口滝一選手に追いつかれた。その後、二位以下との差を広げた鹿児島・入船敏選手が広島のアンカー油谷繁選手より１分近く早く、2時間19分52秒でゴール。兵庫と長野はそれぞれ５位と８位だった。
「東京運賃戦争」
東京まで飛行機に乗るのに、今ほどよい時期はないだろう。航空会社３社すべてが、格安価格のチケットを提供しているのだ。全日本空輸は、国内全路線で片道１万円の価格を設定した。しかし、これには条件が付いている。２ヶ月前にチケットを予約する必要があり、この値下げ価格は４月17日から23日、５月１日と6月1日に限定されている。日本航空は、インターネットまたはＮＴＴ（ドコモグループ）の携帯電話で予約したチケットは15％引きにする。この試みは、5月中旬から一ヶ月間ほど実施される。最後に、日本エアシステムは月、火曜日の発着便に特別運賃を設定。割引は60％。もちろん、2ヶ月前に予約が必要、などの条件がある。航空各社はＪＲの脅威、特に東京−広島線についての脅威を注意している。ＪＲは3月、新型新幹線「ひかり RailStar」を導入する予定。左右2列ずつのゆったりした座席や仕切り付きの客室、車内こコンピュータが利用できるなどの特長をもつ。地上と空の競争は、ますます激しくなろうとしている。
「ほぼ完成！」
最近、紙屋町の地下に建築中の地下ショッピングモールの基本構造がほぼ、完成した。ショッピング・アーケードは2001（平成13）年の春にオープン予定。これまでに約１万人が地下の工事現場の見学に訪れた。興味のある人は、グループで申し込み可能。電話０８２（２４０）７８０２まで。
