Next month, after a 36-year interval, a steam train will run on the Sanyo line once more and the train will be pulled by C 57-1. The train will run on March 12 and will leave JR Shimonoseki Station at 9.50 am. The train, called SL Mirai-go, will travel to Ogori and is scheduled to arrive there at 11.16.
The trip has been organised as one of the pre-events celebrating the opening of Shimonseki's new aquarium in 2001, together with other events involving Yamaguchi. There are seats on the train for 320 people, 100 for those living in Shimonoseki itself and the remainder for those living outside the city. People interested in making this unique journey behind this unique engine should send a postcard with their name and address to Shimonoseki City Hall. To coincide with the new millennium, the regular visitors which cross the shores of Japan will have some new names. These regular visitors are, of course, the typhoons which travel up from near the equator during late summer and early autumn. When typhoons have been given names, Asian countries have usually followed the American custom and used English names like Kate and Sam. From this year, however, Asian typhoons will have Asian names and the first 14 have been chosen.
Typhoon 1, for example, will henceforth be called Damrei, which is a Cambodian name, and other names have been contributed by various nations in Asia, including the USA and also Japan. Japan's contribution is the name for Typhoon 5, which is to be called Tenbin. ‘Tenbin’ is short for Tenbin-za, or Tenbin-kyu, and is the Japanese name for the constellation Libra, the scales. The USA has kept to the practice of female names for Typhoon 13, which will be called Maria.
However, it is likely that countries will still go on using their own names for typhoons, or numbers, which is the practice followed by the Japanese weather service.
The new Akinada ohashi, which connects the island of Shimo-Kamagari with the mainland has been attracting many customers during its first week of operation. Double the number of customers expected have actually used the bridge.
にわとりのしっぽ
Niwatori-no-shippo is a small restaurant situated in Iwakuni near the JR station. The main feature of the shop is that it has no menu. Instead, a board displays kyo-no-shokuzai (‘ingredients available today’). The idea is that the customer looks at what is available and then decides what he or she would like. However, there is a table d'hote menu, costing from \2,000. Generally, the Japanese ingredients are skilfully “arranged” in a western way. 「山陽線に蒸気機関車」
かつては蒸気機関車が客車を引っ張り、山陽線の上り線と下り線を走らせていた。しかし今では、中国地方を走る蒸気機関車は、津和野と山口県の小郡を季節運行する、Ｃ５７−１だけになっている。
その蒸気機関車が、来月、３６年ぶりに山陽線を走る。客車を引くのは、Ｃ５７−１。汽車は３月１２日、午前９時５０分にＪＲ下関駅を出発する。「ＳＬ未来号」と名づけられたその列車は午前１１時１６分に、小郡に到着する予定だ。
この小旅行は、２００１年に下関市に開館する水族館のオープニングセレモニーとして、山口県で開かれる他の行事と併せて計画されている。汽車の座席は３２０人分で、うち１００席は下関市在住者に、残りは下関市外の在住者に割り当てられる。この珍しい汽車でのユニークな旅行に興味がある人は、葉書に住所と氏名を書き、下関市役所に応募する。問い合わせ先は ０８３２−３１−１１１１。
「名前をもらった訪問者」
新しい千年紀の到来と同時に、日本列島を定期的に通過する訪問者も新しい名前を持つことになる。この定期的な訪問者とは、もちろん、夏の終わりから秋の初めにかけて、赤道近くからやって来る台風のことである。台風に名前をつける時、アジア諸国は通例、アメリカの慣習に従って「ケイト」や「サム」といった英語の名前を使ってきた。だが今年から、アジアの台風にはアジア諸国で使われる名前が付けられることになり、最初の１４個の台風の名前が既に決まっている。
今後は、例えば台風1号は、カンボジアの名前で「ダムレイ」と呼ばれる。アメリカともちろん日本を含むアジア諸国は、他の名前を提案している。日本の割り当ては、台風５号で、名前は「天秤（てんびん）」。「天秤」は、天秤座、天秤宮（きゅう）を縮めた名前で、星座リベラの日本名。アメリカは、台風１３号に「マリア」と付け、女性名を付ける慣習に従った。
しかし、アジア諸国内では、日本の天気予報で番号が引き続き使われるように、それぞれの国独自で名前や番号を用い続けそうだ。
「笑顔が出る橋」
新しく出来た、下蒲刈島と本州をつなぐ安芸灘大橋は、開通後の一週間、多くの利用者を集めている。予想の２倍の利用があった。
