Jack Frost Visits

Hiroshima was virtually brought to a halt on February 9 when heavy snow carpeted the Chugoku region. Snow began to fall the day before and by morning Hiroshima City had received 12 cm., the largest amount since 1996. Geihoku-cho, in the north of the prefecture, received 70 cm. As usual, the snow played havoc with transportation networks in the morning rush hour. The shinkansen slowed down, with consequent delays, and sections of the Chugoku and Sanyo motorways were closed to traffic. Students at 13 schools were probably very happy to find that classes had been cancelled and classes began late at many schools that remained open.

Taking Guard

In Nishi Hakushima-cho, a local company has begun to supply guards on a volunteer basis at a subway which was recently the scene of a fatal stabbing. The subway is very quiet at night and some parents are reluctant to allow their children to use the subway when going home alone. So, the parents at neighbouring schools were very happy that Teikei Hiroshima, a local security company, decided to supply the volunteers at times when students return home from school and juku. The patrols in the subway started on February 8th.

Judgement Day

Hiroshima District Court has handed down the death sentence on a taxi driver who murdered four women over a five-month period in 1996. Hiroaki Hidaka, 37, strangled the first victim in the taxi with his tie. After taking \50,000 in cash, he buried the victim, Rie Miyaji, a high school student aged 16, in Numata-cho, Asaminami-ku, Hiroshima. The first murder occurred in April and in August & September Hidaka strangled three other victims in the same way and buried the bodies at various places in Hiroshima. As with Rie Miyaji, he stole from his victims amounts of money varying between \52,000 and \82,000.

Animals vs. Humans

The two are members of the same species, but they definitely do not mix, especially when the humans are driving motor vehicles and travelling fast. Wild animals have been seen in increasing numbers close to the main population centres and the roads which connect them. Racoon dogs, foxes, wild boar have all been seen by motorists in places like Koi, Kabe, and the National Route 2 Hiroshima Bypass. Occasionally accidents happen and the animals are killed. The problem arises because the natural habitat is diminishing and the animals come to human population centres in search of food.

「冬将軍（寒波）の到来」

　中国地方が大雪に覆われた二月九日、広島のほとんどの機能がほぼストップした。雪は前日から降り始め、広島市内では朝までに一二�aの雪が積もり、一九九六年以来の積雪量となった。県北部の芸北町（山県郡）では積雪は七〇�aにもなった。雪が降るといつもそうなるように、朝のラッシュ時には、交通網は大混乱に陥った。新幹線は徐行運転のために遅れ、中国道や山陽道の数カ所は交通止めとなった。学校が休校となった十三校の生徒たちは喜んだだろう。休校にならなかった多くの学校でも、授業開始を繰り下げた。

「警戒態勢」

　　先日、刺殺事件が起きた西白島町の地下道では、近くの会社がボランティアで巡回警備を始めた。夜の地下道は人気がなく、子どもたちが一人で帰宅するとき、地下道を通らせたくないという親もいる。なので学校の近くに住む親たちは、地元の警備会社「テイケイ広島」が、学校や塾から生徒たちが帰宅する時間帯に巡回警備を始めたと聞いて、とても喜んだ。地下道での巡回は二月八日から開始している。

「審判の日」

　広島地裁は、一九九六年に五カ月間にわたって四人の女性を殺したタクシー運転手に対して、死刑宣告を言い渡した。日高広明被告（三七）はタクシーの中で、最初の犠牲者をネクタイで絞殺。現金五万円を奪った後、当時十六歳だった高校生の宮地里枝さんを、広島市安佐南区沼田町に埋めた。最初の殺人は四月に起きたが、八月と九月には他の三人の女性を同じ方法で絞め殺し、遺体を広島県内の数カ所に埋めた。宮地里枝さんの場合と同じように、日高被告は犠牲者から五万二千―八万二千円を奪っている。

「動物対人間」

　動物と人間は、同じ哺乳（ほにゅう）類ではあるが、はっきりと住む場所を区別しなければならない。人間が自動車を運転したり、速いスピードで移動したりしているときにはなおさらだ。野生生物が見つかる場所は、人口が集中している市街地とそれをつなぐ道路にどんどん近づいてきている。タヌキやキツネ、イノシシはすべて、己斐や可部、国道2号線の広島バイパスなどの通行者によって発見された。時には事故が起こり、動物たちが死ぬこともある。自然生息地が減少しているため、動物たちが食べ物を求めて人間の住む中心街にやってくるようになったことに原因する。
