Moving: On Wheels...

It is now two years since Hiroshima introduced ‘non-step’ buses on several routes in the city. The venture has been judged a success, with some 1,800 wheelchair passengers using the buses.

The buses are operated by Hiroshima Bus and Hiroshima Dentetsu, which use eight buses each on two inner-city routes. Three of the four routes operate to and from the hospitals attached to the medical and dental faculties of Hiroshima University. By far the largest number of wheelchair passengers, 1,400, used the Hiroden services and the company has made a poster for display on its vehicles. The poster asks passengers to help wheelchair passengers to get on and off the bus.

...On Wings...

J-Air is a commuter airline which operates routes from Hiroshima's old airport, now called Hiroshima Nishi Airport, in Kanon-machi, Nishi-ku. The airline operates 19-seater propeller driven planes, but wants to replace these with 50-seater jet planes. The airline, whose parent company is JAL, has been requesting permission from Hiroshima City and Prefecture to operate the planes, so far without success. The airline indicated that it would consider moving its base from the airport if permission had not been granted by the end of March this year.

But Not On Platforms

Driving vehicles when wearing slippers and traditional Japanese geta is thought to be dangerous and is banned in Osaka. Now the police are worrying about the dangers presented by platform shoes and boots. These are the latest fashion among girls and young women and feature very thick soles and heels, usually from 60 to 110 millimetres. An accident research centre in Tokyo tested the braking time and braking distance of cars driven by persons with such footwear and found that the time and distances were greater than when drivers wore ordinary boots or training shoes.

A Burning Desire?

Last week, Hiroshima police arrested one Eiji Takeshita, aged 39, on suspicion of committing an unusual crime, namely, setting fire to his workplace. Mr Takeshita is suspected of setting fire to Asaminami-ku Ward Office around 1 am on February 13. He was seen leaving the building shortly afterwards. Mr Takeshita joined local government service in 1980 and moved from place to place as his career progressed. He moved to the taxation section in April 1995. Shocked employees of the ward office began a major clean-up operation in order to restore normal functions with as little delay as possible to the public.

「車いすで移動・・・」

　広島市が市内のいくつかの路線に「ノンステップバス」（乗降口の段差をなくした超低床バス）を導入して二年。1,800人の車いすの乗客がバスを利用したことから判断すると、この思い切った事業は成功していると言えるだろう。 　バスを走らせているのは、広島バスと広島電鉄。それぞれ二つの旧市内を走る路線で、８台のバスを運行している。４路線のうち３路線は、広島大学医学部付属病院を発着する。車いす乗客者の大半（約1,400人）は、広電の路線を利用。同社は車いす乗客者の乗り降りを手助けするよう、乗客へお願いするポスターも作り、車内に張っている。

「翼で移動・・・」

　ジェイ・エアは広島に昔からある空港、広島西飛行場（西区観音町）からコミューター便を運航している。同社は現在19人乗りのプロペラ機を運航しているが、50人乗りジェット機への交換を考えている。ＪＡＬが親会社の同社は、広島市と県に、ジェット機の乗り入れを要請しているが、現時点では、実現は難しいようだ。同社は三月末までに許可が得られない場合、ジェット機整備基地を移転することを表明している。

「厚底靴ではだめ」

　スリッパや伝統的な日本のげたを履いての自動車の運転は危険なため、大阪では禁止されている。最近、警察は厚底の靴やブーツによる危険を心配している。厚底靴は、少女や若い女性たちに流行っている最新のファッション。たいてい60ミリから110ミリもある厚い底や高いヒールが特徴だ。東京の交通事故総合分析センターは、厚底靴で車を運転したとき、（障害物に）反応するまでの時間と急ブレーキで停止するまでにかかる距離を計測した。その結果、普通のブーツや運動靴を履いている時よりも、時間がかかり、距離も長くなることがが分かった。

「燃える欲求？」

　先週広島県警は、竹下英二容疑者（39）を職場に放火するという異常な罪を犯した容疑で逮捕した。竹下容疑者は２月13日の午前１時ごろに安佐南区役所に放火した疑い。彼はそのすぐあとに、建物から出ていくところを目撃されている。同容疑者は１９８０年に広島市に採用され、昇進とともにいくつか職場を変わった。１９９５年４月から安佐南区役所の課税課に勤務していた。放火でショックを受けた区役所の職員は、できるだけ早く行政サービスへの影響を最小限に抑え復旧させるよう片付けなどの作業に追われた。
