Shimanami On Two Wheels・・・

The Setouchi Shimanami Kaido has established itself as an important link between the Honshu and Shikoku, via the various islands in the Seto Inland Sea, and also as an important tourist attraction. One advantage of the route is that it is possible to use it on foot, or by bicycle or motorcycle. Bicycles are already available for rental and are proving popular, but an enterprising group in Mukaishima-cho has started a ‘renta-bike’ scheme. Mukaishima is the first island one passes on the route, after leaving Onomichi City and the local group, which is known as the Machiokoshi-koryukai, decided to promote the attractions of the township and also to make these attractions more easily accessible. The scheme started at the beginning of March and there are various rental options available, including helmets and gloves, and customers can also choose from a variety of suggested tourist routes. Motorcycle riders and other drivers need to exercise their skills safely, especially the young and the elderly. To this end, a trio of driving school employees have been studying transport psychology: the awareness of young people and the elderly when they get behind the wheel or in the saddle. The students attended the graduate school of Hijiyama University, in Higashi-ku, and participated in a joint project for the Master’s degree, under the direction of Prof. Satoshi Nishiyama. The three students, Messrs. Kawabata and Mihara from Kabe Driving School and Mr. Taniguchi from Numata Driving School, took as their topic the mutual interaction of different age groups in a motorised society and conducted extensive surveys among young people, the middle-aged and the elderly relating to how each age group regarded safety and road sense in their own and other groups. They found some striking differences. For example, over 50% of the young people surveyed (those from 18 to 29) thought that members of their own age group drove with varying degrees of danger, but over 80% of the elderly (those over 70) thought that they themselves drove fairly safely. The trio graduated from Hijiyama University in the spring.

Value-added Rubbish

In Hiroshima City the removal of large-sized items will soon cease to be a free service. Up to now, such rubbish has been collected six times a year in most wards of the city. In April, 2001, charges will be introduced and the city will begin a PR campaign in the coming fiscal year.

「しまなみ」に二輪車が通行・・・

　瀬戸内海のいろいろな島を経由する「瀬戸内しまなみ海道」は、本州と四国をつなぐ重要な橋として、また重要な観光資源として認められるようになった。このルートの良いところの一つは、徒歩、自転車、バイクのいずれでも渡れる点だ。レンタサイクルはすでに利用でき、人気を得ているが、向島町のまちおこしグループが、「レンタバイク」企画を始めた。向島は、尾道市を過ぎて、初めにしまなみ海道が通過する島。地元の住民グループ「まちおこし交流会」が、町の活性化を図り、橋を観光客が利用しやすいようにしようと計画した。この企画は3月始めにスタート。レンタルできる付属品には、バイク用のヘルメットや手袋も含まれる。また利用者は、いくつか用意されたおすすめの観光コースを、選ぶことができる。貸し出し対象は原則、20歳以上。問い合わせは0848-44-4929。

・・・安全に

　バイクのライダーや自動車の運転手、なかでも特に若者とお年寄りは、安全運転の技術を磨く必要がある。この目的のため、自動車学校で働く３人が交通心理学を学び、若者と高齢者が車やバイクを運転している時の意識を研究した。３人は東区の比治山女子大の大学院に通い、西山啓教授のもと、修士の学位に向け共同研究に参加した。3人の生徒は、可部自動車学校の川端伸夫さん、三原武徳さん、沼田自動車学校の渓口裕之さん。彼らは修士論文のトピックに「車社会における世代間の共生に関する研究」を選び、若者、中年層、高齢者に対して、各世代のグループがそれぞれ運転の安全性や運転技術をどうみているかについて大規模な調査を行った。その結果、いくつか意外な違いが明らかになった。例えば、調査対象となった１８歳から２９歳までの若者の50％以上が、自分たちの年齢層の運転は多かれ少なかれ危険と答えたが、70歳以上の高齢者の80％以上が、自分たちの年齢層の運転は、おおかた安全と考えている。3人はこの春、比治山女子大、大学院を修了した。

有料ゴミ

　広島市では、大型ごみの処分がまもなく有料化される。今まで、広島市のほとんどの区では一年に6回収集されていた。2001年の4月から有料化が始まり、市は本年度からPRを始める。
