A Drama of Suspense

An accident occurred recently on the Miyajima Ropeway, which conveys visitors to the island to the top of Mt. Misen. March 26 was a windy day and strong gusty winds had been forecast by the weather centre. Wind speeds on the island exceeded 15 meters per second and around 1 pm, an especially strong gust of wind caused a gondola on the ropeway to hit one of the steel columns from which the ropes were suspended, slightly injuring two passengers. The ropeway automatically stopped moving, leaving gondolas stranded in mid air for several hours. Two of the gondolas were relatively close to the ground, so the occupants were rescued by the local fire services or by the operating staff. However, some 30 passengers in the remaining gondolas had to wait till the ropeway began moving again around 5 o'clock, when they were rescued one by one.



Astramliners Reach 100 Million

At around 10. 30 am on March 19, Hiroshima's Astramline carried its 100 millionth passenger. The day was the system's 2,039th day of operation. The passenger, Yukiko Imura, 32, passed through Kencho-mae Station with her 5-year-old son, Tatsuya. A commemoration ceremony was held and the couple were presented with gifts by the station master.



Gambatte Geibi Sen!

The JR Geibi Line connects Hiroshima City with Miyoshi City, in the northern part of the prefecture. Compared with the Shinkansen and the Sanyo Main Line, the Geibi Line is something of a Cinderella. The line is not electrified and is single track throughout, the latter feature making it very difficult to run express trains along it, or even for trains to pass. The express trains that do run take all of 70 minutes to reach Miyoshi and only four such trains can run daily. The lack of crossovers, where oncoming trains may pass or overtake each, other entails long intervals between trains.

Nevertheless, despite meandering through a rural part of the prefecture, with a comparatively small population, the Geibi Line serves an important function as a commuter line and ways are being sought to run more trains along the line at faster speeds. JR West Japan and both the city and prefectural governments plan eventually to operate a city commuter train service with a 10-minute headway. The plans call for new crossovers at Hesaka and Kumura Stations and for new stations at two locations between Yaga and Aki-Yaguchi. During the fiscal year which has just begun, both the city and prefecture plan to conduct passenger surveys and to make a start on the planned improvements by fiscal 2002.

Ajia is a restaurant in Iwakuni with an interesting name. Apart from being read phonetically as the Japanese version of ‘Asia’, the three characters mean (in reverse order) “Asia, path of flavour”. The restaurant is situated on the 9th floor of the Iwakuni Business Hotel, with views overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The cuisine is Chinese, and two popular dishes are yu-rin-tsu-chi (\700 or \1,050), which features fried chicken, and kan-sho-sha-yen (\1,000, \1,500) which is a deep-fried seafood dish. Tel. 「宙づりの事故」

 先日、宮島への観光客を弥山まで運ぶ宮島ロープウエーで事故が起きた。3月26日は風が強く、広島地方気象台では強い突風が吹くことを予測していた。宮島での風速は秒速15bを超え、午後1時頃には非常に強風が激しさを増し、ロープウエーのゴンドラがロープの吊り下げられている鉄柱の一つに衝突、2人の乗客が軽傷を負った。ロープウエ―は自動的に停止し、ゴンドラは数時間の間、空中で立ち往生した。二台のゴンドラは、地上に比較的近かったため、乗客は地元の消防士や、(広島観光開発の)従業員によって救助された。しかし、残りのゴンドラに乗っていた約30人は、ロープウエーが再び動き始める5時頃まで、そのままゴンドラ内で待たねばならず、一台ずつ救出された。



「アストラムライン一億人達成」

 3月19日の午前10時半ごろ、広島のアストラムラインに1億人目の客が乗車した。その日はアストラムラインの運行開始から2,039日目。1億人目の乗客、井村幸子さん(32)は、県庁前駅で5歳の長男、多津也ちゃんと一緒に改札を通った。開かれた記念式典で、2人には駅長から記念品を贈られた。



「がんばって芸備線!」

 JR芸備線は、広島市と県北部の三次市を結んでいる。新幹線や山陽線と比べ、芸備線はあまり価値を認められていなかった。この線は電力化されておらず(ディーゼルエンジン)、全線単線のため、急行を走らせること、そして列車がすれ違うことさえ非常に難しい。急行は三次に到着するまで70分もかかり、運行本数も1日4本しかない。対向列車がすれ違う、行き違い施設が十分に設置されていないため、次の列車が運行できるまでの間隔が長く必要になる。

 それでも芸備線は、人口が比較的少ない県の農村部を曲がりくねって走っているのだが、通勤路線として重要な役割を担っており、より速く、より多くの列車の運行が求められている。JR西日本と広島、三次両市・県の行政は最終的に、10分間隔でシティ電車を走らせる予定。この計画では、戸坂駅、玖村駅、そして矢賀と安芸矢口間2つの新しい駅に、行き違い施設の架設が必要になる。始まったばかりの会計年度期間中に、市と県は乗降客数予測調査を実施し、2002年度までに改善に着手する見通し。
