The city of Onomichi is experiencing an unprecedented wave of tourists. This is mainly due to the opening of the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, the new scenic highway linking the main island of Japan with Shikoku, via the islands of the Inland Sea.
In the seventies, there were wide variations in the number of visitors to Onomichi, from just over 2.5 million in 1972 to around 1.5 million in 1979. During the last decade up until 1998, the city has had a steady influx of around 2.1 million tourists annually. With minor fluctuations, the general pattern has been a slow decline, with the lowest figure, of 2,019,667 visitors for 1998. Last year, however, some 3.37 million visitors sampled the attractions of the city, an increase of 65% over the 1998 figure.
The city has been staging various events to attract the traffic using the new highway, such as the Onomichi Minato Matsuri (Port Festival) and the Sumiyoshi Hanabi Matsuri (Firework Festival), and plans to hold a series of “One Year After the Opening” commemorative events until the end of May.
The Hiroshima Branch of JR West Japan has annually held a Miss JR Hiroshima competition, to select some attractive young ladies for JR public relations events & campaigns, and JR posters. However, in the wake of new laws against sex discrimination, the conclusion has been drawn that the Miss JR Hiroshima competition discriminates against men. Rather than abandon the event altogether, JR have changed it and introduced a new competition called Communication Pal JR Hiroshima. So JR are now looking for five attractive young men over 18 to be ‘communication pals’ for a year, to the present and future users of JR. A trip to Guam or Hawaii is on the cards for the lucky winners. The deadline for applications is the end of this month and the persons selected will take up their duties in June. Hiroshima City Office has its own atomic-bomb museum, but very few people appear to be aware of its existence. The museum is an underground exhibition room, of around 100 sq. metres in area, situated directly in front of the City Office. When the present City Office was built, the decision was made to preserve a part of the original A-bombed building. There are around 150 items on display, including damaged building materials and panels of photographs. However, there are some days when no one visits the museum.
For those who feel peckish when strolling along Namiki-dori or the Peace Avenue, a cafe-cum-bar has been open since last July. J Cafe is actually on Jizo-dori, the southern continuation of Namiki-dori, on the corner of Heiwa-dori. The establishment serves coffee, drinks, including 70 different types of cocktail, and food. There are 13 different types of sandwiches to choose from and also other light meals, including set menus at lunchtime (\600). The cafe has a distinctive European ambiance. Tel. (082) 242-1234.

「尾道の観光客が急増」
尾道市に、かつてないほど観光客が押し寄せている。これは瀬戸内海を通って本州と四国を結ぶ新しい景観のよい道路、瀬戸内しまなみ海道の開通の影響が大きい。
1970年代の尾道市への観光客は、1972年の250万人強から1979年の150万へと大きく推移した。1998年までの10年間には、毎年安定して210万人前後の観光客が訪れた。（その10年間の）観光客は変動が少なく全体的に緩やかに減少して、最低が1998年の201万9667人だった。しかし、去年は1998年の65％増となる約337万の観光客が市の名所を訪れた。尾道市は、新しい道路（しまなみ海道）で人を呼び込む様々なイベント、例えば尾道みなと祭や住吉花火まつりを企画しており、5月末までに一連の「開通一周年」を記念する行事を開く予定。
「JRの新しいコミュニケーション」
JR西日本広島支社は毎年、「ミスJRひろしま」の選考会を催し、JRの広報事業やキャンペーン、ポスターのモデルをする数人の魅力的な女性を毎年選んできた。しかし、性差別を禁止する新しい法律（改正男女雇用機会均等法）を受け「ミスJRひろしま」は男性に対する差別だという結論に達した。JRは、この企画を全面的に止めるのではなく、「コミュニケーション・パルJRひろしま」という新たな選考会に変えることにした。JRは、今後一年間、現在と未来のＪＲ利用客にＰＲする「コミュニケーション・パル」として働く18歳以上の魅力的な五人の若者を募集している。運良く選ばれた人には、グワムかハワイへの旅行が当たる予定。締め切りは今月末で、当選者は6月から業務を開始する。応募資格があると思われる人は同社総務企画課(082)- 261 -1796 に電話してみては。
「もう一つの原爆博物館」
広島市役所は独自の原爆資料館（旧庁舎資料展示室）があるが、知っている人はごくわずかなようだ。その博物館は、市役所地下の展示室で、約100平方メートルあり、市役所の建物の真ん前にある。現在の市役所が建てられた時、被爆した旧庁舎の一部を保存しようということになった。破損した建材や写真パネルなど約150点が展示されている。しかし見学者がゼロの日もある。
