The Glass House

Nishi-ku in Hiroshima City now has a new, state-of-the-art, fire station. The fire station looks on to Heiwa-odori and the design is very striking, for the building is a steel skeleton totally encased in glass. There are eight floors above ground level and one below and the building is well-equipped to handle major crises and is also energy-saving. The Mayor of Hiroshima, Mr. Tadatoshi Akiba, was present at the inauguration ceremony and gave a speech. Mr Akiba noted that a lesson learned from the Hanshin earthquake was the need for buildings such as the new fire station to be highly quake resistant and also well equipped to rescue trapped people and save lives.

Smoother Interchanges

The Nishi-Hiroshima tramcar station of Hiroshima Dentetsu is a busy interchange, with some trams continuing to Miyajima and other turning round and going back to Ujina or Hiroshima Station. Hiroden have decided to improve the facilities by combining the platforms and increasing the number of exits. After the alterations are completed, in July, trams going to Ujina, Hiroshima Station and Miyajima will depart from separate platforms. Each weekday, 21,000 passengers use the station in 581 tram journeys. The improvements will cost \470 million.

Graduate Studies Advance

Hiroshima University is making solid advances in the facilities it offers for graduate studies. At the northeast corner of the Higashihiroshima campus construction is proceeding of a joint research facility, which will provide a ‘common space’ for research in advanced technology and related subjects which overlap between science and engineering.

Meanwhile, on the Higashisenda campus, in Naka-ku, the matriculation ceremony was held of the first intake of students in the Department of Management Studies of the university’s Graduate School of Social Sciences. On April 27, the President, Dr Yasuo Harada, with the vice-presidents and deans of various departments in the graduate school in attendance, all wearing gowns and mortarboards, formally admitted 33 students. A special feature of the new department is that the students are all mature students working in companies and government offices. They will study for their advanced degrees in the evenings and in the summer vacation.

Denim is In!

For girls and young women the thing to be seen wearing this year is a demin jacket, but not necessarily with jeans. The jacket can be worn with a skirt or miniskirt, and with boots or sandals.

ガラス張りの建物

　広島市西区にこのほど、最新の（技術を使った）消防署が出来た。平和大通りに面して建っており、デザインは非常に斬新。建物は鉄骨で、全面ガラスで覆われている。地上８階、地下１階建てで、大きな災害に対処できるような設備が整っており、省エネ対策も施されている。落成式には、広島市の秋葉忠利市長が出席し、スピーチをした。秋葉市長は「阪神（・淡路）大震災の教訓から、建物はこの新しい消防署のように高い耐震性能を備え、また人命救助をするための機能を必要とするようになった」と述べた。

乗り換えをよりスムーズに

　広島電鉄の西広島駅は乗り換えの人が忙しく行き交う。そこから何本かは宮島に向かい、ほかはＵターンして宇品か広島駅に向かう。広電は（西広島駅と己斐電停の）プラットホームを統合し、出口を増やすよう改修することにした。改修後の７月には、宇品や広島駅、宮島行きの市電は、ホームの別々の個所から出発することになる。

　同駅では平日、２万１０００人が５８１本の電車を利用。改善にかかる総工費は４億７千万円。

大学院の進歩

　広島大学では、大学院研究科の設備が着実に進歩している。東広島キャンパスの北東には、共同研究施設の建設が進められている。この施設は先端技術研究や、科学や工学など他の関連科目との共同研究のためのスペースを備えている。

　一方、広島市中区の東千田キャンパスでは、社会科学研究科マネジメント専攻一期生の入学式があった。

　４月２７日、原田康夫学長、副学長、そして出席した大学院の学部長がガウンと制帽を身に付け、正式に３３人の生徒の入学を認めた。この新しい学科の特色は、生徒が全員、会社や役所で勤務している大人の学生であること。彼らは学位をとるために、夕方や夏休みに勉強する。

デニムが流行！

女の子や女性の服装で今年よく見かけるのは、デニムのジャケット。しかし必ずしもジーンズと揃（そろ）いで着るのではない。ジャケットはスカートやミニスカート、ブーツやサンダルと組み合わせて着ることができる。
