Death on Route 2

Another fatal road accident recently occurred in Hiroshima Prefecture. This time the accident happened on National Route 2, on a section of the Nishi-Hiroshima Bypass in Saeki-ku, Hiroshima City.

The accident occurred at 3.20 am, when a car travelling in an eastbound lane of the bypass hit an articulated lorry travelling in the same direction. However, the car, driven by Naotake Kaneoka, aged 27, crashed through the barriers separating the eastbound and westbound sections of the bypass and crashed head-on into two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction. Mr Kaneoka suffered severe injuries to the head and other parts of his body and died soon after the accident, as did Mr Tsuyoshi Matsumoto, aged 19, who was in one of the westbound vehicles hit by Mr Kaneoka’s car. Mr Tatsuya Nagamoto, also aged 19, who was a passenger in Mr Matsumoto’s car, also died and three other persons suffered various injuries, some critical. According to the Prefectural Police, the cause of the accident appeared to be loss of control while travelling at excessive speed.

Mr Kaneoka and his wife, who was one of the injured, were on their way home to Nukushina, Higashi-ku, and Mr Matsumoto and his companions were travelling home to Iwakuni from the Tokasan festival in Hiroshima.

As a result of the accident, both eastbound and westbound sections of the bypass were closed in the vicinity of the accident until 7 am and 8.25 am, respectively. It is also noteworthy that all those killed in the accident were under 30 years of age.

It’s Tough Being a Student!

In an effort to extend the counselling services available to its students, Hiroshima University has established Peer Support Rooms on its Saijo campus. Peers are the members of a group: those senior and junior students with whom all Japanese students have to establish a satisfactory relationship. The Peer Support Rooms at Hiroshima University are the first of their kind to be established in Japanese universities.

The idea of the Peer Support Rooms is to provide guidance and counselling to students who might otherwise be overwhelmed by the experience of being one student at a large, impersonal university. Some students, who cannot cope with such pressures, commit suicide and the new counselling service, staffed by 26 trained volunteers, is a major step in helping students to cope with the problems involved in the transition from high school to adulthood.

The Peer Support Rooms were formally opened by Hiroshima University President Yasuo Harada on June 1.

「国道２号線の死」

　死者の出た交通事故が、また先日、県内で起きた。今回の事故は広島市佐伯区の国道２号線西広島バイパスで起きた。

　事故の発生は、午前３時２０分。バイパスの上り線を走行中の車が、同じ車線を走っていた大型トレーラーに接触した。金岡尚武さん（２７）が運転するその車は、バイパスの中央分離帯を突き抜け、反対車線の車二台に頭から衝突した。金岡さんは、頭部などに大けがをして、まもなく死亡。金岡さんの車に衝突された対向車線の車に乗っていた松本剛志さん（１９）も死亡。松本さんの車に同乗していた長本達也さん（１９）も死亡、他の３人も負傷し、重体となった人もいた。広島県警は、事故の原因はスピードの出しすぎにより、ハンドル操作が効かなくなったためとみている。

　金岡さんと、負傷した妻は、東区の温品の家に帰宅途中で、松本さんとその同乗者たちは、広島市内の祭り「とうかさん」から岩国の家に帰る途中だった。事故の後、現場付近のバイパスの上り車線と下り車線はそれぞれ、午前７時と午前８時２５分まで通行止めとなった。事故で死亡した人全員が、３０歳以下だったことも注目すべきことだ。

「学生も大変」

　学生への相談業務を充実させようと、広島大は、西条キャンパスにピア・サポート・ルームを設立した。

　ピアとは、すべての日本人の先輩・後輩が、満足のいく人間関係をつくっていくグループのメンバー、仲間のことである。このようなサポートシステムは、日本の大学では、広島大が初めてになる。ピア・サポートの理念は、巨大で非個人的な大学の中で、一人でいることに押しつぶされそうな学生を指導し、相談にのることだ。学生の中には、そんなプレッシャーにうまく対処できず、自殺をする学生もいる。専門の研修を受けた２６人のボランティアによる新しいカウンセリング・サービスは、学生が高校生から大人への変わり目の問題に対処するための、大きなステップである。

　ピア・サポート・ルームは、広島大の原田康夫学長によって６月１日、正式にスタートした。
