Nature-Encountered

On June 4, the summer climbing season started on the highest mountain in the Chugoku region. On that day, some 4,000 people converged on the 1,729-metre Mt. Daisen in Tottori Prefecture. On the summit the Sancho Matsuri (Summit Festival) was held from ten in the morning and prayers were offered for peace and for the safety of climbers on the mountain. Although there was some cloud, the climbers, who came from all over western Japan, were still able to enjoy the rugged scenery.

Nature-Damaged

Students on school excursions to Hiroshima have taken to inscribing slogans on one of the trees in the Peace Memorial Park. The tree in question is actually an A-bomb survivor and stood in the grounds of the Chugoku Telecommunications Bureau in Higashi- Hakushima-cho. It was moved to its present position inside the park in 1973. The tree is a member of the species Firmiana platanifolia, and is known as a Chinese parasol, or phoenix. The tree is not far from the place where A-bomb survivors relate their experiences to the students and some of the messages are appeals for peace. However, park officials are concerned at the damage being caused to the tree and are expressing their concerns to the teachers responsible for the students. One Yasuda High School student expressed the hope that students on study trips would refrain from expressing their opinions in such a harmful way.

Nature-Created

On June 2, visitors to the Asa Zoo had their first chance to see two of the zoo’s new residents. Tamako, a 3-year-old Amur leopard living at the zoo, brought her new cubs into the spotlight for the first time. The 3-month-old cubs emerged from their quarters under the watchful eye of their mother. The male weighs just over 7 kg and his sister nearly 6 kg and both are about 50 cm long. They will be on view to the general public from 9 till 2 each day. As the name implies, the native habitat of the Amur leopard is mainly the Amur region of Russia, but there are only about 50 of the species thought to be left in the wild.

Original T-Shirts

In summer a preferred garment is the T-shirt and there are many designers in Hiroshima anxious to show off their skills. On June 4, a T-shirt exhibition in Naka-ku came to an end and a group of designers have joined forces to market brands as Hiroshima originals. The exhibition showed 30 types which were the work of 27 designers, mostly amateurs who were also housewives, students, or company employees.

「自然−出会い」

　６月４日、中国地方で最も高い山で夏山開きがあった。当日は、約４千人が標高１７２９メートルの鳥取県の大山に集まった。頂上では山頂祭が午前１０時から始まり、山の平穏と登山者の安全を祈願。やや雲が出ていたが、西日本各地から来た登山者たちは、山頂から、岩だらけの景色を満喫することができた。

「自然−被害」

　修学旅行で広島を訪れた生徒たちが、平和記念公園にある一本の木にメッセージを彫り付けるのが習慣になった。問題になっている木は被爆した木で、（以前は）東白島町の中国逓信局（現・中国郵政局）の敷地内に立っていた。1973年に、平和記念公園内の現在の場所に移された。この木はファーミアナ・プラタニフォリア種で、アオギリまたはフェニックスという名前で知られている。この木は、被爆者が被爆体験を生徒たちに話す場所から近く、メッセージのいくつかは平和をアピールしている。しかし、公園関係者は木に与えられた被害に心を痛め、生徒を引率している先生に、その心配を語った。安田女子高の生徒は「修学旅行にくる生徒達は、そのような被害をもたらしてまで自分たちの思いを表さないでほしい」と話した。

「自然−創造」

　６月２日に安佐動物園に訪れた人たちは、２匹の新しい動物園の居住者を、初めて目にすることができた。動物園に住むアムールヒョウのタマコ（３歳）が、自分の子どもたちを人前に連れ出したのは初めて。３カ月の赤ちゃんヒョウは母親に見守られながら、自分たちのすみかから現れた。雄の体重は７�sをちょっと超え、雌は約６�sで、２匹とも体長は約５０�pある。

　２匹は、毎日午前９時から午後２時まで一般に公開される。名前が示す通り、アムールヒョウの生息地は、主にロシアのアムール地方だが、野生の生息数は、ほんの約５０匹と推定されている。

「オリジナルＴシャツ」

　Ｔシャツは夏に好まれる服装だが、自分の腕前を見せたがるデザイナーがたくさんいる。６月４日には、中区で開かれていたＴシャツの展示会が終わった。多くのデザイナーが力を合わせ、広島のオリジナルブランドを売り出した。展示会には、２７人のデザイナーの作品３０種類が並んだ。デザイナーのほとんどは主婦や生徒、会社員といったアマチュアだった。
