Quiet Festival

One of the three main festivals in Hiroshima City took place without any untoward incidents. Tokasan took place over three days on June 2nd, 3rd and 4th in an area centring on Chuo-dori. This main thoroughfare became a pedestrian precinct and was full of young couples and families strolling along the street and patronising the various stalls. Of the bosozoku groups whose behaviour in November last year had marred another festival, the Ebisuko, held in the same area of the city, there was no sign. Their absence was in part due to the preventive measures made by the police against the groups and their leaders and also to the strong presence at the festival of the police, teachers and others concerned with the guidance of young people.

Two New Maps

Two new road maps have been produced by a committee set up by a local branch office of the Construction Ministry, Hiroshima City and Hiroshima Prefecture. One map, the Hiroshima Jitensha Map, is designed to help cyclists. The map is of the inner city area centring on the Kamiya-cho crossing and also provides much helpful information about parking places and routes suitable for cyclists. The other map is of the western suburbs of Hiroshima, specifically the old Sanyo Road in Hatsukaichi City. The map is the Saigokukaido-sansaku-chizu (a map for walking along the western national road, i.e., the Sanyodo) and enables walkers to discover shrines, temples and other places of interest along the old route. The cycling map is available from the information centres at Hiroshima Station, the Rest House, or by calling (082) 281-4131, while the Saigokukaido map can be obtained by calling the Hatsukaichi Tourist Association on (0829) 31-5656.

Damage Precautions

Last year, there was very heavy rainfall on June 29. Landslides caused extensive damage to many places in the western part of Hiroshima Prefecture and this year measures have been taken to ensure that there is a higher level of public awareness of the dangers. One location which suffered heavy damage last year was Saeki-ku and local patrols have been strengthened by the police and civic groups. On June 5, a group of 52 participants visited various danger spots in Saeki-ku and looked at damage prevention measures. In addition, the topic featured prominently in the June 15 issue of the city’s information sheet Shimin to Shisei and a large illustrated map entitled Dosha-saigai-kara-mi-o-mamoru tame-ni (How to Guard against Damage from Landslides) was circulated with the morning newspapers on June 15.

「平穏な祭り」

　広島の三大祭のひとつ「とうかさん」は、何の事件もなく、終わった。「とうかさん」は２、３、４日の３日間にわたり、中央通りを中心とした一帯が会場となった。このメインの通りは歩行者天国になり、街をぶらついたり、屋台を見て回るカップルや家族連れであふれた。昨年の１１月、同じ場所であった別の祭り「えびす講」は暴走族によって台無しにされたが、今回はその兆しはなかった。暴走族が現れなかったのは、暴走族やそのリーダーに対して警察が予防のための措置を講じたこと、また、教師や少年補導員などが会場で指導したためと考えられる。

「２つの新しい地図」

　建設省広島国道工事事務所と、県、市でつくる委員会が２つのあたらしい道路マップを作った。ひとつは「広島自転車マップ」で、サイクリスト（自転車に乗る人）のために作成された。地図は紙屋町交差点を中心とした広島市中心部を範囲としており、駐輪場の場所やサイクリングに適した道に関して役立つ情報を提供している。もうひとつは、広島の西部の郊外、特に廿日市市の旧山陽道を紹介する地図だ。「西国街道散策地図」（旧山陽道を歩くための地図）で、旧道に沿って歩きながら神社、寺社、その他興味深い場所を見つけることができる。サイクリング用の地図は広島駅の観光案内所や平和記念公園のレストハウスで入手可能、問い合わせは、電話（０８２）２８１−４１３１。西国街道は廿日市観光協会　電話（０８２９）３１−５６５６。

「被害予防策」

　昨年６月２９日、集中豪雨があった。地すべりで広島県西部の多くの場所が大きな被害を受けたため、今年は一般市民の危険に対する意識を高めるように対策がとられた。昨年、大きな被害に苦しんだ佐伯区では、警察と区域住民によって地域のパトロールが強化された。６月５日には５２人の（パトロールの）参加者が佐伯区の危険個所をいくつか訪れ、被害防止対策が取られている場所を見学。加えて、市の情報を載せた広報紙「市民と市政」の６月１５日版では、この豪雨災害に関する特集があり、図解入りの大きな地図「土砂災害から身を守るために」が朝刊と一緒に配布された。
