Charmed Circles?

Visitors to the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park have recently noticed large clumps of kinoko mushrooms growing on the lawns between the Peace Memorial Cenotaph and the Peace Museum. The mushrooms are brown in colour and are about 5 cm tall with the umbrella about 2 cm in diameter. They are growing in unbroken circles about 2 metres in diameter or in parabolas and their appearance has been a source of amazement to visitors. Mushrooms like this have never been seen in the park before and a member of an association for studying the fungi stated that the kinoko mycelium filaments spread out from the spores in a circle, given the right conditions of humidity etc, and mushrooms grow from the mycelium filaments furthest away from the centre. In Europe such circles are known as ‘fairy rings’. The member, Mr. Kawakami, added that he, too, had never seen so many mushrooms growing in the same place.

A Trip Back in Time

On August 26, JR West Japan is to run a very special train between Shin-Osaka and Hakata Stations on the Sanyo Main line. The train is the Hato, and it used to run on the Tokaido and Sanyo lines until it was replaced by the Shinkansen. JR West Japan will run the trip in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Sanyo Shinkansen along the entire route from Shin-Osaka to Hakata. Those who want to take a trip back in time can obtain tickets from their local JR TiS travel shop.

No High Heels

Hiroshima Prefectural Public Safety Commission has banned wearers of platform shoes and sandals from driving and has also extended the ban on the bending of vehicle number plates or the covering up of the figures on the plates to include bikes with an engine capacity of 125cc or below. Shoes and sandals with platforms heels are currently all the rage with young women, but are considered to prevent effective use of the brake in an emergency. The new measures became effective from July 1 and penalties for infringement range from ￥5,000 to ￥7,000.

Unwillingly to School

Hiroshima City Board of Education has confirmed that the number of pupils absent from school continues to rise. In the 1999 school year, 1,480 pupils were absent from the city’s elementary and junior high schools for more than 30 days. In an effort to combat the practice of children shutting themselves in their rooms and refusing to communicate, beginning this month the city will send counselling teams to talk to the families.

ミステリーサークル？

　平和記念公園内の原爆慰霊碑と原爆資料館の間にある芝生に、最近、たくさんのキノコが発生した。キノコは茶色で、高さ約５センチ、カサは直径約２センチの大きさ。直径２メートルほどのきれいな円を描いたり、放物線状になって群生し、訪れた人たちを驚かせている。こうしたキノコ群が平和公園内で見つかったのは初めてで、あるきのこ研究会（広島きのこ同好会）のメンバーは、キノコの胞子から菌糸が円状に広がり、湿度などの条件も合い、一番外側の菌糸からキノコが生えた、という。ヨーロッパではこのような現象は「妖精の輪」と呼ばれる。メンバーの川上さんは、このようにたくさんのキノコが同じ場所に生えているのを見たことがないと話している。

昔をしのぶ旅

　修学旅行で広島を訪れた生徒たちが、平和記念公園にある一本の木にメッセージを彫り付けるのが習慣になった。問題になっている木は被爆した木で、（以前は）東白島町の中国逓信局（現・中国郵政局）の敷地内に立っていた。1973年に、平和記念公園内の現在の場所に移された。この木はファーミアナ・プラタニフォリア種で、アオギリまたはフェニックスという名前で知られている。この木は、被爆者が被爆体験を生徒たちに話す場所から近く、メッセージのいくつかは平和をアピールしている。しかし、公園関係者は木に与えられた被害に心を痛め、生徒を引率している先生に、その心配を語った。安田女子高の生徒は「修学旅行にくる生徒達は、そのような被害をもたらしてまで自分たちの思いを表さないでほしい」と話した。

厚底はだめ

　広島県公安委員会は厚底靴やサンダルで運転したり、規制の対象でなかった１２５ｃｃ以下のバイクのナンバープレートを折り曲げたり、数字を隠したりする行為を禁止した。厚底靴やサンダルは最近若い女性の間で大流行しているが、緊急時にブレーキをうまく踏み切れないと考えられている。この新たな規制は七月一日から発効し、違反すれば５０００円から７０００円の罰金となる。

学校はいや

広島市教委の調べで学校に行かない児童、生徒が増え続けていることが分かった。１９９９年度には、市立の小中学生１４８０人以上が、学校を（年間）３０日以上休んだ。自室に閉じこもり、人との接触を拒む子どもの習慣を治そうと、今月中に、家族の相談にのるカウンセラーの派遣を始める予定。
