Monument Cleaned・・・

Tomorrow will mark the 55th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Peace Memorial Park has been the scene of a number of recent happenings. The area around the A-Bomb Cenotaph was cleaned by a volunteer group. From 1 pm on July 29, some 30 members of the group assembled and worked for two hours. Using water, brushes and a hose, they cleaned the area around the cenotaph and between the cenotaph and the Peace Flame. The group has been cleaning the monument twice yearly since 1964. One volunteer who was accompanied by his two children said that cleaning the monument would encourage them to think carefully about peace.

・・・Tied With Ribbon

On July 30, a group of A-bomb survivors and local residents gathered at the A-Bomb Dome with the Peace Ribbon. The 250 participants made a circle round the Dome bearing 1,200 ribbons tied together. The ribbons bore messages remembering the atomic-bomb victims and calling for world peace and the abolition of nuclear weapons. A short ceremony was held from 8 o’clock onwards during which students of Koi Higashi elementary school reiterated their desire for an end to nuclear weapons and wars. The Peace Ribbon was inaugurated in 1990 and has been held every five years since then and the next event is planned for 2005.

Clean River

The A-Bomb Cenotaph and vicinity was not the only one of Hiroshima’s local landmarks to be cleaned. On July 23 some 20,000 volunteers, in 150 volunteer groups, took on a much more ambitious project, that of cleaning the Ota River and its tributaries. The work was led by an organising committee composed of representatives from construction ministry, the prefecture and local cities, townships and villages, and headed by Mr. Akiba, the Mayor of Hiroshima. The river was last cleaned four years ago and this year’s clean-up was the eighth so far.

A Yen For Travel

The city’s travel agents record that increasing numbers are booking trips abroad for the summer. The keynotes this year are Price - Speed - Length: the costs are low, the holidaymakers do not spend long in getting to their destinations, and their holidays last for about a week. The favoured destination is Europe, especially Italy, and one probable reason is the weakness of the Euro, compared with the Yen. One travel agent noted that overseas bookings for July and August were over 20% up, compared with the same period last year.

「モニュメントの清掃・・・」

　広島は明日６日、原爆投下から５５周年を迎える。平和記念公園は原爆の日を前に、多くのイベントの舞台となっている。原爆慰霊碑の周辺は、ボランティアグループが清掃した。７月２９日午後１時から、ボランティア約３０人が集まり２時間、清掃に汗を流した。ブラシとホースを使い水で碑の周りや、碑と平和の灯（ともしび）の間を洗い流した。このグループは1964年から年に２回、清掃活動をしている。

　２人の子どもを連れて来たボランティアの一人は、「清掃を通じて子どもたちが平和について考えるようになれば」と話していた。

「・・・リボンで結んで」

　７月３０日、原爆ドームで被爆者と市民グループによる「平和のリボン」の集会があった。参加した約２５０人は、１２００枚のリボンをつないでドームを囲んだ。リボンには、被爆者の思いや、世界平和と核兵器廃絶を願うメッセージが書かれていた。午前８時から短いセレモニーがあり、己斐東小学校の児童たちが核兵器や核戦争がなくなることを繰り返し願った。「平和のリボン」は1990年に始まり、５年おきに開かれている。次回は2005年の予定。

「クリーン太田川」

　広島で清掃された名所は、原爆慰霊碑とその周辺だけではなかった。７月２３日、約150団体、２万人のボランティアが太田川とその支流でさらに大掛かりな清掃活動をした。この清掃は建設省、県と各市町村の代表などでつくる実行委員会（委員長・秋葉忠利広島市長）が主催した。太田川を最後に清掃したのは４年前で、今年で８回目になる。

「円高で海外旅行へ」

　広島市内の旅行会社によると、今年の夏に海外旅行の予約をする人が大幅に増えているという。今年の傾向は「安・遠・長」。つまり、価格は安く、旅行先が去年よりも遠くなり、休みは一週間程度になった。旅行先はヨーロッパ、特にイタリアが人気。理由はおそらく、円に対しユーロが安いからだろう。ある旅行会社は、「７、８月の海外旅行の予約は前年同月比で２０パーセント増し」と言っている。
