Many small boys at some time in their lives have an ambition to drive a train. Whether their sisters have similar ambitions is less clear, but if they have, these dreams came true for two female employees of JR West Japan.
On August 2, Ms. Yamashita and Ms. Fukuzawa passed the examination to drive a bullet train. On August 17, they received their ‘driving licenses’ from the Transport Ministry. Last spring, the stipulations in the Labour Standards Law governing the protection of women were abolished and with them the regulations banning women from working at night. As a result of the change, female shinkansen drivers have appeared on JR Tokai, but only for a limited period as ‘cadets’. Thus Ms. Yamashita and Ms. Fukuzawa are the first female JR employees whose sole job is to drive bullet trains.
For Ms. Fukuzawa, it is actually a ‘double first’, since her father has been a driver on the shinkansen for many years and heads the drivers section of the Osaka Shinkansen depot. He is an instructor of trainee drivers. Sons following in their father’s footsteps might be quite common on JR, but a daughter following in her father’s footsteps as a driver on the shinkansen is a notable ‘first’.
For the third year running, residents and visitors to Hiroshima can enjoy a Parisian-style outdoor cafe right in the centre of the city. The Open Cafe Terrace can be found in the Komachi district of Heiwa-odori and customers can experience ‘City Lights’: the bright lights of the inner-city and the bustle of the traffic moving along Heiwa-odori; ‘Greenery’: sitting in the sylvan setting of Heiwa-odori under the trees; and ‘Breeze’: the rustling of the trees in the breeze. The cafe can seat up to 100 customers and is open every day until September 25. The menu has a variety of drinks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic, and light snacks. Opening hours are 5 P.M.to 9.30 P.M. on weekdays and 5 P.M.to 8.30 P.M.on weekends and holidays.
This year is the 82nd summer high school baseball tournament and teams from all the 47 prefectures have been chosen by elimination contests. The team representing Hiroshima Prefecture is Setouchi High School, whose visit to the Koshien baseball ground, the ‘Field of Dreams’, was their first in summer. Last Wednesday, Setouchi beat Okayama Rikadai Fuzoku High School from Okayama Prefecture by 10 points to 1.

「JR女性運転士の挑戦」
多くの少年は、列車を運転したいという夢を抱く時がある。少女たちが同じような夢を抱くかは、さほどわからないが、もしそうならば、2人のJR西日本の女性社員の夢は、かなったことになる。
8月2日、山下さんと福沢さんは新幹線運転士の資格試験に合格した。8月17日には、運輸省から「運転免許証」が交付された。昨年の春、労働基準法改正で女子保護規定が撤廃され、女性の深夜勤務制限もなくなった。その結果、女性の新幹線運転士がJR東海で誕生したが、限られた期間に研修生として運転しただけだった。したがって山下さんと福沢さんは、新幹線の運転を専門とする、初の女性運転士になる。
福沢さんにとってそれは、一度に2つの勲章だ。なぜなら、父親が長年、新幹線の運転士をつとめ、大阪新幹線運転所に所属している。現在は後進の指導にあたっている。JRには父親の後を継ぐ息子が多いが、新幹線の運転士として、娘が父親の後を継ぐのは初めてで、記念すべきことだ。
「野外で食事」
広島の市民や観光客はこの三年間、市中心部でパリ風のアウトドアカフェを満喫している。オープンカフェテラスは平和大通りの小町地区にあり、客は、街の明かり(市内の明かりと平和大通りの車のざわめき) や、緑 (平和大通りの木々の下で、緑が茂った場所に座る) や、そよ風 (風で木がサラサラ鳴る音) を体験できる。カフェは100席あり、9月25日まで毎日営業している。メニューにはアルコール類やソフトドリンクなどいろいろな飲み物と、軽食がある。営業時間は平日が午後5時から9時半、週末と祝日は午後5時から8時半。
「瀬戸内高校が甲子園に進出」
第82回夏の全国高校野球選手権大会で、47都道府県から予選で出場高校が選ばれた。広島県代表は瀬戸内高校で、同校の「 夢の球場」でもある夏の甲子園出場は初めて。水曜日には、瀬戸内高は、岡山県代表の岡山理科大付属高を10対1で破った。
