Summer Weather

On August 28 around 3.40 pm in Hiroshima City, the daytime temperature had climbed to 35.6゜C, which was the second highest temperature for the whole of the summer. This summer has been marked by very little rain and intense heat, the average temperatures for July being the third highest since records began.

According to the figures supplied by the Hiroshima Weather Centre, far less rain than normal has fallen in the city this summer. July marks the latter half of the rainy season, with an average rainfall of over 108 millimetres falling in the first part of the month. This year, precisely one millimetre of rain fell in the early part of July. The only time when the average rainfall was exceeded this year was in the later part of July, when 74 millimetres fell, against an average of 71.6. August also saw far less rain than average and the figure for the third part of the month was 3 millimetres, compared with an average of 36.8 millimetres. The apparent drought, however, only extends to Hiroshima City and adjacent coastal areas. The mountainous areas in the north of the prefecture have had rather more rainstorms and showers.

As for temperatures, the average in Hiroshima City climbs from around 27゜in early July to around 32゜in early August, and then gradually declines.This year, however, the temperatures stayed way above average, with peaks of 35.1゜, 36.9゜and 35.6゜.



Too Many Taxis?

Anyone who visits the centre of Hiroshima City, especially at weekends and in the evenings, will see long lines of taxis waiting for passengers. The taxis wait on busy thoroughfares in the centre of the city and certainly contribute to traffic congestion. By waiting outside the designated areas they are also certainly committing a traffic offence, but despite the best efforts of the taxi association and the police, the problem shows no signs of solution.

One place where waiting taxis congregate is in Motomachi, outside the Motomachi CRED shopping complex. There is a designated taxi rank, but often the line of waiting taxis extends to the Kamiya-cho crossing and beyond to Aioi-dori. The appearance of a police car will usually cause some movement in the line, especially if verbal warnings issue from the police car, but after it has passed, the line returns to normal.

Apart from the Kamiya-cho area, other places where taxis congregate illegally are on Chuo-dori and in the vicinity of Hiroshima Station. The local taxi association instructs drivers not to park illegally and the police claim more citations for illegal parking than usual.

食洞空間 和楽

As its name implies, Shokudo kukan Yawaraku is a cavernous restaurant dedicated to the pleasures and eating and talking. It is situated in Mikawa-cho, Naka-ku,in a building known as Namiki Renaissance. At lunchtime, it is filled with young office workers, mainly female, and in the evenings reservations would seem to be desirable. There are 60 items on the menu, including dishes such as Bakudan (\790) and Kutsushiru (\600), with tofu, wakame seaweed and chilled miso soup. Tel. (082) 240-0079.

「夏の天気」

 8月28日午後3時40分ごろ、広島市では日中の気温が35.6度まで上がり、この夏2番目の暑さになった。今年の特徴は小雨と高温で、7月の平均気温は観測史上3番目に高かった。

 広島地方気象台によると、今年の夏の広島市の降水量は、通常よりかなり少ない。7月は雨期の後半にさしかかり、初旬は平均108ミリ以上の降水量がある。しかし今年は、ちょうど1ミリだった。この夏、唯一平均降水量を上回ったのは7月下旬で、平均71.6ミリに対して74ミリだった。8月もまた平均よりかなり少なく、下旬は平均36.8ミリに対して3ミリ。しかし、水不足のようだったのは、市と近隣の沿岸地域だけだった。県北の山間部では、風雨やにわか雨が結構多かった。

 気温に関しては、広島市の平均は7月上旬から8月上旬にかけ、27度から32度前後に上昇、その後除々に下がる。しかし、今年の気温は平均を上回りつづけ、ピークは、35.1度、36.9度、35.6度だった。



「タクシーは多すぎる?」

広島市の中心街では、特に週末と夕方、客待ちタクシーの長い列が見受けられる。タクシーは、市中心部のにぎやかな通りで停車しており、交通渋滞の一因となっているのは間違いない。指定区間以外で待つことで、交通違反の対象にも無論なっている。タクシー業界と警察は最善を尽くしているが、問題が解決される気配はない。

 客待ちタクシーが集まる場所は、基町にある基町クレドショッピングモールの周辺。タクシー乗り場は指定されているのだが、客待ちタクシーの列は紙屋町交差点や相生通りまで続くこともしばしば。パトカーが姿を現して警告を発すると、列は大体移動するのだが、いなくなるとまた元に戻る。

 紙屋町以外で、タクシーが違法駐車する場所は、中央通りと広島駅近辺。県タクシー協会広島支部は、運転手に違法駐車しないように指導、警察は違法駐車切符を平年より多く切っている。しかし実際の所、何ら変わってはいない。
