In the wake of the falling concrete which plagued JR West Japan last year, great efforts are being made to learn lessons from those mishaps and increase the levels of service provided to customers. Even the pigeons, perennial visitors at railway stations all over the world, will find a frosty reception at JR Hiroshima Station if the new laser technology recently introduced to cope with pigeon droppings is effective.
One sign of the new spirit is the information offered to customers at JR Hiroshima Station. On the shinkansen side, three large TV monitors have been installed which give, among other information, the seat availability on all bullet trains passing through the station. If services are disrupted or delayed, owing to typhoons or accidents, the actual schedules can be displayed in ‘real’ time. On the south side of the station, a total of 48 large illuminated signs have been installed on six platforms, which give information about the whereabouts of the doors on approaching trains. The new signs, which cost around \40 million, are the first such signs to be used by JR West Japan.
With the chatter of passengers and the constant stream of information about arrival times, connections etc. along the route, JR trains are not the quietest of places. In a new bullet train, however, one car has been designated as an oasis of quiet and calm, with no announcements being given at all except in emergencies. The new train is the Hikari Railstar, which has been running since March between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. The 8-car train has one Silence Car (Car No. 4), where somnolent passengers may put their tickets in special holders to allow examination by the conductor without being disturbed. Even the vending trolley passes through with no spoken indication given of its wares.
JR conducted a survey among users July and the results showed that the Silence Car was truly quiet. Some respondents, however, complained that loud chatter by other passengers, especially groups and children, was too noisy. JR’s response was to provide a written explanation of the purpose of a Silence Car and to ask for the cooperation of customers in creating a quiet environment.
A less welcome phenomenon has been the use of the station concourse as a race track for bosozoku, ‘speed tribes’ of young people on motorbikes and minibikes. The groups ride right past the shops near the ticket barriers, despite the passengers around them.

「JR トピック１：インフォメーション」
昨年のコンクリート落下事故に苦しんだJR西日本は、その後、この不祥事を教訓に乗客のサービスを向上させようと、多くの努力を重ねている。最近ハトのふん対策で導入された、新しいレーザー技術が機能すれば、世界中の駅に住みついているハトでさえ、JR広島駅の冷たい歓迎に気づくだろう。
新たな意気込みのひとつは、JR広島駅の乗客への情報提供にみられる。新幹線口に設置した３台の大きなテレビモニターに、駅に停車する新幹線全列車の空席情報などを提供している。台風や事故でダイヤが乱れたり、遅れたりした場合にも、運行状況がリアルタイムで表示される。駅の南口では、計48基の大きな照明表示が６つのホームに設置され、次の到着列車の乗車位置がわかる。約４千万円をかけたこの新しい表示装置は、JR西日本では初めて導入された。
「JR トピック２：サイレンス」
乗客のしゃべり声や、次から次にアナウンスされる到着時刻や乗り換えの案内など、JRの列車はとても静かな場所とは言えない。しかし新しい新幹線では、一両が、静かにくつろげる場所に指定され、緊急時以外は車内放送が流されない。新しい新幹線は「ひかりレールスター」で、３月から新大阪−博多間を走っている。この８両編成の新幹線には、サイレンス・カー (４号車) があり、睡眠中の乗客が特別なホルダーに乗車券を入れると、車掌は睡眠をじゃませずに車内改札をする。車内販売車も売り込みの声を出さずに通り過ぎる。
JRは７月、利用客にアンケートをして、サイレンス・カーは本当に静かだという結果が得られた。しかし、なかには他の乗客、特に団体客や子どもたちがあまりにうるさいとの指摘もあった。これに対してJRは、サイレンス・カーを導入した理由を書いた要請文を配って、静かな環境をつくるよう協力を求めた。
「JRトピック３：ハイ・スピード・レーシング」
あまり歓迎されないこともある。それは若者たちがオートバイやミニバイクを乗り回す暴走族が、駅のコンコースを走路にしていることだ。暴走族たちは、周りに乗客がいるにもかかわらず、改札口近くの店のすぐ脇を通り過ぎていく。
