Shareo Fills Up

As the underground shopping mall in Kamiyacho nears completion, the vast majority of the spaces in the shopping complex have been let to tenants.

The shopping centre is due to open its doors next spring and the building operations are set to be completed on schedule. As of 21 September, 76 stores, or 90% of the total, had been decided. Tenants for the remaining four shops were expected to be fixed by the end-of-September deadline.

Shareo (meaning elegant & fashionable) is the name of the shopping mall and this seems to be the main theme, with 30 of the 76 stores already reserved specializing in fashion goods, including clothes and accessories. A further 28 stores will sell miscellaneous goods. Food & drink, including okonomiyaki, account for 14 shops and services for four. A further point worth noting is that for 32 tenants, a place in the Shareo shopping arcade will be their first foray into Hiroshima. Many of these tenants are based in Tokyo or Kansai.

Mr. Teruaki Nakamura, who is the president of the third sector consortium responsible for building and managing the shopping complex felt that the new underground shopping mall will compare very favourably with similar underground shopping malls around Japan.

Takanobashi Bridged

Takanobashi, in Hiroshima's Naka-ku, has changed its appearance. Since the new route to Ujina was inaugurated in March, the large traffic intersection has been improved, with a new junction layout and the provision of a large pedestrian footbridge. The tramcars follow a gently ‘S’ shaped curve and the stop for trams bound for Ujina has been relocated. en relocated.

Straddling the junction is the new 66-metre footbridge, due to be completed by the end of the year. The area has been compared to the shore, a ship, and even the sea and, since it will mark the gateway to central Hiroshima for people coming from the port district, its nautical image is quite appropriate. The bridge will really be ‘barrier-free’, having a lift at either end for disabled users.

Where is the Bus?

As a result of the bus hijacking in Hiroshima which took place last May, Hiroshima Dentetsu and Ichibata Bus have collaborated on the first ever system for directly alerting authorities of emergencies. The new system, which relies on a satellite global positioning system (GPS) is being used on the Hiroshima-Matsue route, operated by both companies. Authorities learned of the bus hijacking in May only after passengers had escaped.
